With UN sanctions committee approval, more countries fly aid to Baghdad
5 October -- Having secured the approval of the United Nations committee monitoring the sanctions against Iraq, several more nations have flown humanitarian supplies into the country, a UN spokesman announced today.

A flight from the United Arab Emirates brought aid into Iraq today after receiving authorization from the Security Council sanctions committee, which is known as the "661 Committee" after the resolution which established it in 1990. Algeria is also expected to fly a plane with humanitarian supplies into Baghdad today, according to spokesman Fred Eckhard.

Yesterday, Tunisia conducted a flight into Iraq after receiving the green light from the committee. The total number of countries that sent in supplies in recent weeks has reached eight, including flights by the Russian Federation, France, Jordan, Yemen and Morocco.

Meanwhile, the 661 Committee was scheduled to meet in closed session at UN Headquarters in New York this afternoon. In addition to approving flights into Iraq, the Committee is charged with approving contracts for the sale of Iraqi oil as well as contracts for Iraq's purchase of humanitarian supplies under the "oil-for-food" programme.
