Iraq earns an additional $490 million under oil-for-food programme
19 September -- Exporting 16.8 millions of barrels of oil this week, Iraq earned another $490 million for the humanitarian oil-for-food scheme, according to the latest statistics released today by the Office of the Iraq Programme, which oversees the effort.

The latest sales brought the revenue in the current six-month Phase VIII to over $5.1 billion, the office said. Humanitarian supplies and oil industry equipment continued to arrive normally through three land border points and the Iraqi port of Umm Qasr.

Also this week, the committee monitoring the sanctions against Iraq lifted holds on 12 contracts related to housing and agriculture, paving the way for nearly $19 million worth of goods, including water tankers and rolled sheets, to reach the country. Contracts valued at $1.974 billion remain on hold.

The committee also approved two new contracts for the sale of Iraqi oil, one to a company from Liechtenstein for 2 million barrels headed for the United States and another to a Turkish company for 1.5 million barrels destined for the European market.

In the last week, the committee also gave the green light to an additional 73 contracts for the humanitarian programme in Iraq.
