INTRO: Iraq says Iranian agents have fired three
rockets into a residential area near Baghdad, wounding
one-civilian and damaging several houses. The Iranian
government has not confirmed or denied the incident,
as we hear in this report from Correspondent Scott
Bobb in our Middle East Bureau in Cairo.
TEXT: The Iraqi News Agency says three 120-millimeter
rocket shells landed in Baghdad before dawn (Sunday).
The agency quoted security sources as blaming Iran for
the attack and warning that it would not go
unpunished.
Relations between the two Gulf neighbors remain tense
12-years after the Iran-Iraq war. Iraq supports the
Iranian opposition group Mujahadeen Khalq, which
recently staged several grenade attacks in Tehran.
Iran supports Iraqi groups that have attacked reported
Mujahadeen bases around Baghdad.
The latest incident comes amid rising tensions between
Iraq and other Gulf neighbors. Iraq has accused
Kuwait of pumping Iraqi oil from a field straddling
their common border. Kuwait has denied the charge and
warned Iraq will pay dearly if it launches any
military aggression. (SIGNED)
