INTRO: The United States is letting Russia know it
would object to the Russian carrier Aeroflot resuming
flights to Iraq. Correspondent Nick Simeone reports
such a move would violate United Nations sanctions
that have been in place against Iraq for the past
decade.
TEXT: Washington already has enough trouble keeping
countries united in support for sanctions against
Iraq, especially in light of Iraqi claims that they
have contributed to the deaths of some one million
Iraqi children.
Now, Aeroflot has announced plans to resume flights to
Iraq and open an office in Baghdad next month. The
news drew a sharp reaction from Secretary of State
Madeleine Albright who plans to raise the issue
directly with Russia's foreign Minister during
meetings in New York.
// ALBRIGHT ACT //
We disagree with those who wish to fly into Iraq
and I will make that clear when I see Foreign
Minister (Igor) Ivanov.
// END ACT //
Aeroflot would be the first civilian airliner to
resume regular flights to Iraq since U-N sanctions
went into effect after Iraq invaded Kuwait a decade
ago. (SIGNED)
