Unofficial translation from Russian
Data on casualties after the latest American and British air strikes against Southern Iraq has been published in Baghdad. Fourteen persons were killed and 19 wounded as a result of the bombings of civilian facilities. The northern areas of the country were also attacked.
These facts cannot but cause serious concern, the more so that these actions are being carried out virtually on a daily basis in the so-called no-flight zones and are absolutely illegitimate from the point of view of international law. They also directly contradict the present diplomatic efforts to ensure fulfillment of the Security Council's Resolution 1284 on Iraq.
The hypocritical nature of the loud campaign of charges in connection with the lawful measures taken by the Russian authorities to uproot terrorism on its own soil becomes particularly evident against this background. At the same time, the unlawful actions against a sovereign state entailing big losses of life and destruction are not only being continued but are also being hushed up in every way. Maintaining their silence are all the reputable international organizations that are so proud of their consistent protection of human rights and rejection of "excessive use of armed force against the peaceful population".
