Text: U.S. Applauds Selection of Ekeus to Head Iraq Inspection Commission

"We applaud the decision today by the United Nations Secretary General
Kofi Annan to select Ambassador Rolf Ekeus of Sweden as his nominee to
be Executive Chairman of the UN Monitoring, Verification and
Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC)," State Department Deputy Spokesman
James Foley said January 17.
"We support Ambassador Ekeus, who, in the past, has ably served the
international community in its efforts to disarm Iraq," Foley said.

Rolf Ekeus of Sweden Nominated as Executive Chairman of the UN
Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission
We applaud the decision today by the United Nations Secretary General
Kofi Annan to select Ambassador Rolf Ekeus of Sweden as his nominee to
be Executive Chairman of the UN Monitoring, Verification and
Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC).
We support Ambassador Ekeus, who, in the past, has ably served the
international community in its efforts to disarm Iraq.
We thank the Secretary General for his exhaustive efforts to find a
candidate who meets the rigorous criteria necessary to carry out this
important disarmament mission.
