FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
COALITION AIRCRAFT STRIKE IRAQI MILITARY TARGETS IN THE SOUTH
MACDILL AFB, FL - - At approximately 5:00 a.m. Eastern
Standard Time today, U.S. Navy F/A-18 "Hornet" and U.S. Air Force F-16
"Fighting Falcon" aircraft enforcing the Southern No-Fly Zone used precision
guided munitions to strike three Iraqi military radar sites and two
anti-aircraft artillery sites in southern Iraq.
Coalition aircraft
struck Iraqi military radar sites near As Samawah, Al Kut, and Al Amarah. The
anti-aircraft artillery sites struck were located at As Samawah and Al
Basrah.
The strikes came in response to repeated Iraqi violations of
the Southern No-Fly Zone earlier today.
To date, there have been more
than 420 separate incidents of Iraqi Anti-Aircraft Artillery and
surface-to-air missile fire directed at coalition pilots. Iraqi aircraft have
violated the Southern No-Fly Zone more than 140 times since Operation Desert
Fox.
The military radar sites and AAA batteries were targeted to
further degrade Iraq's ability to jeopardize coalition pilots and aircraft
enforcing the Southern No-Fly Zone in support of United Nations' mandates.
