Aircraft fires on Iraqi radar site

Released: 12 Jan 1999

WASHINGTON (AFPN) -- In what has become an almost daily occurrence, a coalition aircraft has launched a missile against an Iraqi missile site.

At about 11 a.m. Iraqi time Jan. 12, an Air Force F-16CJ fighter conducting routine enforcement of the northern no-fly zone fired a high-speed anti-radiation missile at an Iraqi early warning radar site near the city of Mosul.

A U.S. European Command statement said, "The radar posed a threat to coalition forces in the area." Damage to Iraqi forces is under assessment.

Although such engagements have become commonplace since the end of Operation Desert Fox in December, Marine Corps Gen. Anthony C. Zinni, commander of U.S. Central Command, said in an earlier briefing that coalition aviators are careful not to let down their guard.

"Obviously any time we fly into Iraqi airspace, whether it's in the north or the south, we treat it as flying into a potentially hazardous situation," he said. "We never (let) our pilots go in unprepared for any eventuality."
