RELEASE NUMBER: [99-11-02]
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
COALITION AIRCRAFT STIRKE MILITARY TARGETS
MACDILL AFB, FL - At approximately 9:00 Eastern Standard Time today, U.S. Air Force F-16 "Hornets" and U.S. Navy F-14 "Tomcats," and British Royal Air Force GR-1 "Tornado" aircraft enforcing the Southern No-Fly Zone used precision guided munitions to strike Iraqi military targets in Southern Iraq.
Coalition aircraft struck Iraqi Anti-Aircraft Artillery battery sites near Al Basrah, and As Samawah, and an Iraqi military radar site near Jassan,
All coalition aircraft have returned safely and battle damage assessment is ongoing.
The AAA fire is the latest in a continuing pattern of Iraqi provocations against coalition forces enforcing United Nations Security Council resolutions. To date, Iraq's military has made more that 500 direct provocations, including more than 130 No-Fly Zone violations and more than 360 separate incidents of Iraqi AAA and surface-to-air missile fire directed at coalition aircraft. Our actions today were an appropriate response to reduce this threat to U.S. and coalition aircraft patrolling the Southern No-Fly Zone in support of United Nations Security Council resolutions.
