11.11.99 WE ARE SERIOUSLY WORRIED BY REPORTS ABOUT THE CONTINUING US AND BRITISH AIRSTRIKES ON IRAQ IN THE SO-CALLED NO-FLY ZONES |
Unofficial Translation
We are seriously worried by reports about the continuing US and British airstrikes on Iraq in the so-called no-fly zones.
New airstrikes were delivered, in particular, on November 8 and again they were aimed not only at military but also civilian targets. The number of casualties among the civilian population, including children, is steadily growing.
This is an obvious violation of the fundamental norms of international law, because these zones were established arbitrarily without proper decisions of the UN Security Council.
We cannot but note that these illegal actions against a sovereign state, which have become systematic since December 1998, have been stubbornly ignored by some circles and mass media in the West. At the same time, these circles demonstrate excessive zeal in connection with the lawful actions Russia is taking on its own territory against terrorists and gangs, distort the real state of affairs and give partial coverage of the anti-terrorist operation conducted by the federal forces.
