31 August 1999 State Department Report, Tuesday, August 31, 1999 (Jordan/Hamas, Turkey/Iraq/U.S. aid, Holbrooke/KLA) (350) State Department Deputy Spokesman James Foley briefed. U.S. WELCOMES CLOSING OF HAMAS OFFICES IN JORDAN The United States welcomes the decision of Jordanian government authorities to close Hamas offices in their country, Foley said. Jordan has also issued arrest warrants for some Hamas members for "activities inconsistent with the license allowing the group to operate in Jordan," the deputy spokesman said. The United States has designated Hamas as a foreign terrorist organization. Hamas, a militant Islamic group, has used violence to oppose the Middle East peace process. "We welcome the action taken by Jordan. We think it's a positive step," Foley said. "We believe all concerned should do everything they can to oppose terrorist activities by Hamas." UN SANCTIONS COMMITTEE TO EXAMINE IRAQI OFFER OF OIL AID TO TURKEY The United States is working with the United Nations' Sanctions Committee to examine Iraq's offer of oil assistance to Turkey, which was recently devastated by a powerful earthquake, Foley said. The goal is to insure that diversion of oil from Iraq to Turkey does not violate U.S. sanctions on Iraq, he said. The United States has already provided more than $8 million in aid to Turkey's earthquake victims. Foley could not confirm reports that Albright might visit Turkey after her upcoming trip to the Middle East. Return to Washington File home page
