COALITION AIRCRAFT RESPOND TO IRAQI AGGRESSION

MACDILL AFB, FL - At approximately 2:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time today, U.S. Navy F-14s and F/A-18s, U.S. Air Force F-16s, and British Royal Air Force GR-1s patrolling the Southern No-Fly Zone used precision guided munitions to strike five military targets in Southern Iraq.

In response to Iraqi anti-aircraft artillery fire, Coalition aircraft struck four military communications sites approximately 170 miles southeast of Baghdad near Ash Shatrah, and a surface-to-air missile (SAM) site in the vicinity of Kut Al Hayy, 100 miles southeast of Baghdad.

There were no coalition aircraft damaged during the incident and battle damage assessment is ongoing.

U.S. and coalition aircraft are responsible for enforcing United Nations sanctions and restrictions of the no-fly zones in Iraq. Today's hostile act represents the latest of more than 195 Iraqi provocations in the Southern No-Fly Zone since Operation Desert Fox. Coalition pilots have taken appropriate actions to defend themselves, and they will continue to defend themselves by targeting Iraq's air defense network as long as it threatens coalition planes or forces in the region.
