The Special Republican Guard

The Special Republican Guard was established in 1983. Back then, it consisted of only three battalions, which were gradually expanded to the present size, which exceeds that of an army division.

Command Headquarters:

Sections

Air Defense Command

Location: Behind the Justice Department in Karkh (Baghdad), directly adjacent the Fine Arts Institute in a red building near Air Force Central Command.

Commander of Air Defense: Brigadier General Ramadhan Hussein Ahmed Al-Nassiri Al-Tikriti, and Brigadier General Hassan Yahya Hanno Al-Tikriti (Anti-Aircraft).

Missile Operator: Colonel Tha’ir Jalal Al-Tikriti (Anti-Aircraft).

Intelligence Officer: Major Khalaf Al-Tikriti.

The Command consists of two regiments and three independent batteries.

The First Regiment:

Consists of four batteries and the headquarters are located at the main runway of Saddam International Airport near the missile silo and it has three entrances; one on Airport Street, the other on Abu-Ghraib Street and on the third on the Yusufia-Falouja highway west of Baghdad.

The First and Second Batteries are located at the regiment headquarters. The Third Battery is at Ridhwaniyeh and the Fourth Battery at Tharthar Lake near the Ninth Battalion (Saddam’s residences).

Commander of the First Regiment: Major Nasseer Musa Khalaf Al-Tikriti (Anti-Aircraft): lives in Beiji and is a graduate of an intensive technical seminar at the University of Technology.

Commander of the First Battery: Major Azher Basheer (Anti-Aircraft): originally from Mosul and lives in Hayy Al-Jami’eh (Baghdad).

Commander of the Second Battery: Major Abdul-Karim Albu-‘Ajail (Anti-Aircraft): originally from the Albu-‘Ajail. He was a student at the Air Force Academy but failed his studies and was transferred to the Military College.

Commander of the Third Battery: Major Mu’eyed Yaseen ‘Aziz Al-Tikriti: graduated with the 64th batch of the First Military College. His late father was the military attaché in Syria with rank of Brigadier General. Mu’eyed resides in Al-Sayyidia (Officer’s neighborhood, Baghdad).

The Second Regiment:

Consists of three batteries and the headquarters are located at Al-Nisoor Square in the same building that used to house the Military Police Command.

The First Battery: located at Muthanna International Airport.

The Second Battery: located at ‘Awja (Saddam’s birthplace near Tikrit).

The Third Battery: this is a mobile battery stationed at Ridhwaniyeh.

Commander of the Second Regiment: Lieutenant Colonel Salih Al-Dilaimi (Anti-Aircraft).

Commander of the First Battery: Major Hamid (Anti-Aircraft) originally from Baghdad.

The Anshki Battery: an independent battery headquartered at the Door-Tikrit-Kirkuk intersection.

The Mak-hool Battery: situated near Saddam’s residence at Mak-hool. Its former commander was Major Sa’id Jasim Al-Jibouri.

The Independent Battery: a special mobile battery that uses Chevrolet pick-ups and is stationed with the Third Battery at Ridhwaniyeh. Its principal duty is to accompany motorcades and provide aerial protection. Its commander is Major Ahmed Abdul-Rahman (Anti-Aircraft): originates from Tikrit and graduated with the 68th batch of the First Military College. He is related to Brigadier General Nasseer, the former commander of the Special Republican Guard.

 

Field Artillery Command

Is headquartered at Ridhwaniyeh at the Makasib intersection. It is the site where many veterans of the 1991 uprising are still detained. These prisoners are shunted back and forth to elude UN inspections. Consists of two batteries located at the entrance of Al-Rasheed military hospital.

 

Mortars Command

Headquartered at Abu-Ghraib near the former site of the first inspection point.

 

Tank Command

Consists of two regiments:

The First Regiment:

Located at the Abu-Ghraib camp near the former location of the Hizib Tank regiment, and is called the Adnan Regiment.

Commander: Staff Major General ‘Ajmi Bar’a Ahmed

Intelligence Supervisor: Colonel ‘Azzam Abdul-Rasheed Al-Tikriti

The Second Regiment:

Located at the entrance to Al-Makasib village and its companies are distributed over that area. All the tanks are T-72 models.

Intelligence Officer: Colonel Ghassan Mikhlif Al-Tikriti

 

Communications Command

Located in the Zawra’ Gardens near the Zawra’ Tower. It consists of several platoons and uses several models of wireless instruments as well as civilian and military phone lines.

 

The Chemical Platoon

An independent platoon located near the First Regiment (Anti-Aircraft), on the airport runway near the former ceremonial reception hall.

 

Transport Platoon

Is an independent platoon commanded directly from the top and is furnished with both regular sedans and pick-ups. It provides the units with drivers and vehicles according to need and is stationed at Abu-Ghraib near the former site of the first inspection point.

 

Supplies and Transport Command

Has been established recently and its primary purpose is to take care of all the vehicles of the central command. It is also responsible for furnishing the top officers with vehicles for personal use. It is located at the former site of the Revolutionary Court at the Abu-Ghraib camp.

 

Repair and Towing Workshop

Its duty is to repair vehicles belonging to the Special Republican Guard. It is located at the site of the old Revolutionary Court at the Abu-Ghraib camp. The commander is Major Shaddad.

 

Military Police Platoon

Located at the command headquarters and at the inspection points on the periphery of Baghdad city and at the main transportation depots at Al-‘Alawi and at Al-Nahdha.

 

Intelligence Bureau

( part of the Special Security Orgenization )

Recently established and is headquartered at the central command of the Special Republican Guard. There is an intelligence officer within every military unit of the Special Republican Guard.

 

Accounting Directorate

This directorate consists of several departments:

1-Accounting department.

2-Verification department.

3-Expenditure department.

The supervisor is Major Mahmud and the head of the verification is major Abdul-Samad Yaseen Suhail Al-Doori.

It is headquartered at Hayy ‘Amil, behind the Central Markets at the head of the Airport Highway near the Umm Al-Tubool Mosque. The building formerly belonged to the Finance Ministry and it also houses a special communications room called “One-One”, which is the central communications desk between the Special Intelligence, Amin Al-Khass, and the Special Republican Guard. This desk covers the road from the Palace to the airport and links the patrols and officers stationed along that road.

 

Ammunitions

The ammunitions silo lies at Hayy Al-Furat near the seventh battalion and near the “ASKWA” residential complex that houses the members and officers of the Special Republican Guard (between the seventh and second battalions).

Quality Control

Headquartered at Abu-Ghraib near the Supplies and Transport Command and its commander is Brigadier General Walid Al-Tikriti who used to work in the Iraqi Embassy in Paris.

Back-up Regiment: headquartered at Abu-Ghraib

Self-propelled Artillery Regiment: headquartered at Ridhwaniyeh.

 

Independent Platoons

1-Tank Platoon stationed at Ridhwaniyeh.

2-Intelligence Platoon stationed at the Republican Palace.

Commander of the platoon: Lieutenant Colonel Faris Al-Tikriti (numerically equivalent to a battalion).

Consists of the Abu Nawwas Squad commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Ahmad Yaseen Al-Tikriti (numerically equivalent to a platoon). Also consists of a patrol squad, traffic squad, and police squad.

The patrol squad is distributed at the Republican Palace, Hayy ‘Amil and ‘Amiriyah. The inspection squad is commanded by Brigadier General Khalil Al-Tikriti “Abu Omar” and its duties is to supervise surveillance cameras and equipment at Hayy ‘Amil and the ministries of Defense and Oil, as well the “special” road.

3- Broadcasting Station Defense Platoon: headquartered at As-Salihiyeh. Commanded by Major Thabit Al-Nufoos (numerically equivalent to a battalion).

4-The Elite Mobile Platoon headquartered at the Republican Palace.

5-The “Special Squad” (numerically equal to a platoon) commanded by Major Ra’id Al-Watani, president of the Salahud-Din Athletic Club.

 

The Identification Colors of the all the battalions

of the Special Republican Guard

1-The First Battalion: red.

2-The Second Battalion: green.

3-The Third Battalion: red.

5-The Fifth Battalion: beige.

The rest of the battalions are all identified by the red color.

 

The First Brigade

“Commanding Brigade”

consists of 180 officers and 6916 ranks

Headquarters: Hayy Al-Qadisiyeh; near the Special Republican Guard Command/ Al-Nisoor Square at Al-Harithiyeh. Housed in the former Military Police headquarters.

Duties: security details.

Commander: Staff Colonel Mezahim: originally from Beiji and is decorated with three “Bravery” medals; ranks as a “friend of Saddam” in the Ba’ath party.

Staff Major General Qussai Wa’ad-Allah Hassan Al-Habbeh: originally from Mosul.

Chemical Staff First Lieutenant Ahmed ‘Abbas Muhammed Al-Tikriti.

The headquarters of the brigade consist of:

1-Headquarters platoon.

The Battalions of the First Brigade

 

The First Battalion

“Security Battalion”

Headquarters: located in Hayy Al-Jihad (near Hayy Al-‘Amiriyeh), near the National Security College and the Communal Shops of the Officers of the Secret Police. The former headquarters used to lie on the 14th of July Street in front of the former People’s Army building at the end of Al-Kindi Street. It commands a platoon in the nearby Hayy Al-Furat near the local Ba’ath Party headquarters, and it is a special mobile platoon that accompanies Saddam’s motorcade. It also commands another platoon inside the Republican Palace that is the second line of defense for Saddam, as well as three other platoons stationed at the headquarters.

 

Duties of the Battalion: Protection and accompaniment of Saddam’s motorcade.

Command of the First Battalion:

Staff Colonel Barzan Arzeej Suleiman Al-Majid: Saddam’s cousin.

Lieutenant Colonel Rasheed: representative of the commander.

Lieutenant Colonel Jasim: assistant to the commander.

Major Talal, battalion staff officer.

Lieutenant Colonel Ra’ad, intelligence officer.

Captain Ahmed Kheero, communications officer.

Captain Muhammed Ahmed, clerical officer.

 

The First Platoon:

Its duties include special mobility within the Republican Palace and orchestrating diversionary presidential motorcades.

Commander of the First Platoon: Major Kheir-Allah Al-Tikriti

This platoon consists of 150-200 fighters who operate some 150 Mercedes Benzes.

The Second Platoon:

Duties: third line of defense after the bodyguards and the “special” protection. All of its members are drivers who operate Mercedes and their duty is to accompany any presidential motorcade within the country and to spread out as a third line of defense in any area visited by the president. Furthermore they act as back-up should any other cars in the motorcade break down or crash. This platoon is commanded by Major Ra’id Al-Nassiri.

The Third Platoon:

Duties include transport and diversionary tactics. Includes an anti-aircraft squad and other related squads, which provide aerial protection. Major Zeki Al-Doori commands this platoon.

The Fourth Platoon: Commanded by Major Salam.

The Fifth Platoon: Commanded by Major Jamal.

The Back-up Platoon: Commanded by Major Emad.

The Headquarters Platoon: Commanded by Major Akram ‘Abbas Al-Dilaimi

 

The Second Battalion

“Security Battalion”

Headquarters: Al-‘Amiriyeh at the end of Hayy Al-Furat on the parallel road to the Airport Highway, near the UN ASKWA Offices.

Duties: to be deployed on foot to protect Saddam’s motorcade, to set up roadblocks on any routes leading to his residences or lakes, to protect his personal farms and palaces close to the airport, and to prevent anyone from entering these areas even if it is the commander of the Special Republican Guard. They also provide roadblocks and protection for farms belonging to Saddam’s relatives.

Commander of the Second Battalion: Staff Colonel Mustafa Al-Tikriti; resides in Hayy Al-Jihad.

This battalion consists of eight platoons, each containing 200-300 fighters.

The intelligence officer for this battalion is Major Haithem Al-Majid: a relative of Saddam’s whose authority exceeds that of the commander.

 

The Fifth Battalion

“Security Battalion”

Headquarters: inside the Republican Palace.

Duties: this is a vital battalion and its duties involve protecting the entrances to the Republican Palace and setting up road blocks on the routes leading to the National Assembly and the Republican Palace as well as the inspection points within the palace.

Commander: Staff Colonel Ra’ad Dahham Al-Tikriti: ranks in the Ba’ath party as a “friend of the president”. Decorated with eight “Bravery” medals. Resides in Baghdad/Qadisiyeh special complex in front of the Suspended Bridge.

Intelligence Officer: Captain Ra’id Hammood Al-Nassiri. Saddam’s maternal cousin. Decorated with several “Bravery” medals. His brother is one of Saddam’s closest bodyguards. He resides in the Qadisiyeh special complex.

Security Officer: Captain Sa’ad. Originally from Baghdad, born in 1970 and is decorated with several “Bravery” medals.

Assistant to the commander: Captain Lazim Al-Tikriti, resides in Beiji. Decorated with several “Bravery” medals.

Political Guidance Officer: Major Hussein Al-Shargi, resides in Baghdad and is well liked.

 

Platoons of the Fifth Battalion:

The First Platoon:

Headquarters: inside the military bureau facing the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Commander: Captain Mazin, originally from Tikrit and resides in the Qadisiyeh Complex/Baghdad.

Duties of the platoon: guarding the National Command of the Ba’ath Party, the Special Dijleh Complex exclusive for ministers, as well as Adnan Kheir-Allah’s palace, and the Ukhaidher palace in Al-Jadiriyeh (near Babel Hotel), and the tomb of Michel Aflaq.

The Second Platoon:

Commander: First Lieutenant Muhammed Yaseen Al-Tikriti. A modest man who lives in the Qadisiyeh Complex/Baghdad.

Headquarters: inside the palace.

Duties: securing the four main entrances to the palace, and the interior entrances together with a special anti-aircraft regiment headquartered inside the Republican Palace.

Entrances to the Republican Palace:

  1. The front Al-Khalid [Eternal] Hall.
  2. The back Al-Khalid [Eternal] Hall.
  3. The swimming pool inspection point.

 

The Third Platoon:

Headquarters: The National Assembly.

Commander: Major Hassan ‘Ajaili, originates from the village of Albu ‘Ajail and is decorated with several “Bravery” medals. He has been barred from promotion for a year due to consistent tardiness.

Duties: Guarding Saddam’s private museum, the special yachts, Udai’s swimming pool (Saddam’s son), the Presidential Court, the Cabinet building, the Ministry of Planning, the car garages of the President’s family, the headquarters of the Special Intelligence Apparatus, the Arab Child Hospital, the Office of the President’s Secretary, and the Office of the Director of the Presidential Court.

Commander of the Third Squad: Captain Muhammed Omar Al-Tikriti.

 

The Fourth Platoon:

Headquarters: the Information Desk of the Presidential Palace.

Commander: Captain ‘Ala’ Al-Tikriti; resides in the Qadisiyeh Complex.

Duties: The main inspection points leading to the palace which include the Ibn Sina Hospital, the Hall of Eternity, the Information Desk of the Presidential Palace, the Information Desk of the Presidential Court, the National Assembly, the Cabinet Building, and the Shakiriyeh inspection point.

This platoon consists of three squads: 10, 11, and 12. 10 and 12 are commanded by First Lieutenant Omar Al-Tikriti. The 11th is commanded by Captain ‘Assim Al-Tikriti, originally from ‘Awja, Tikrit, devout Muslim.

Weaponry: Russian-made BKC-RBK Kalashnikovs.

 

The Fifth Platoon:

Headquarters: inside the Republican Palace.

Commander: First Lieutenant Muhammed Al-Badrani. Resides in Mosul near Jadideh on the Kuweir road, and is a devout Muslim.

Duties: Early warning.

 

The Sixth Platoon:

Headquarters: inside the Republican Palace, with one squad stationed at the Muthanna Airport.

Commander: Captain Suheil ‘Azzawi, originally from Diyala and is the maternal cousin of Hattim Hamdan Al-‘Azzawi; formerly an intelligence cadre who was made into an officer.

Duties: Early warning.

Assistant Officer: Omar; originates from Kut, clerical staff.

Assistant Officer to the Commander: Muntassir; originates from Baghdad.

Assistant Officer to the Commander: Muhammed Ghaghban; originates from Baghdad.

Assistant Officer to the Commander: Ahmed Hitler; originates from Diyala.

 

Headquarters Platoon:

Consists of an elite mobile squad with cars and motorcycles, and the “House Squad” which protects the Presidential House in the palace compound.

Duties of the Fifth Battalion

Three hours of duty, and three hours of rest. Often, they would accompany Saddam on hunting trips. A Special Intelligence officer conducts their training and it basically revolves around the techniques of protecting important officials. Their instructions come directly from the Supervisor of both the Special Intelligence Agency and the Special Republican Guard: Qussai Saddam Hussein. Training also involves infantry and intensive commando training. Training is conducted on the grounds of the Republican Palace starting at 7:00am until 10:00am.

 

The Seventh Battalion

“Security Battalion”

Headquarters: Al-‘Amiriyeh/Hayy Al-Furat, near an elementary school.

Duties: This is an independent battalion whose members are in civilian clothing and most made it into the Special Republican Guard through contacts. Their basic duty is protect the private residences of officials.

Commander: Brigadier General Tha’ir Husamul-Din Al-Dahhan

Consists of five platoons:

One is in Mosul (presidential area).

Another in Falouja at the private presidential farms.

Another in Basra spread out over several special locations.

Two at Jabel Mak-hool.

 

The Eighth Battalion

“Security Battalion”

Headquarters: Ridhwaniyeh/Saddam International Airport from the Abu-Ghraib side near the prefab residences of airport employees which used to house the French company that supervised the building of the airport, near Al-Faris Al-Arabi Club.

Duties: Protecting the entrances to the airport from the Airport Highway and from the Abu-Ghraib road.

Commander: Staff Colonel Jubeir Al-Dilaimi

 

The Second Brigade

“Commanding Brigade”

Consists of 102 officers and 2798 ranks

Headquarters: located at the Rasheed military base; a short distance after the inspection point on the left-hand side; near the Rasheed military Hospital.

Duties: Standby for Immediate Combat

Commander: Staff Brigadier General Muhammed Najah Al-Tikriti.

Intelligence Officer: Staff Lieutenant Colonel Muhammed: originally from Mosul.

Security Officer: Major Zayed Al-Tikriti.

Commander of the Commando Platoon: Major Ghazi Burgus: originally from Ramadi.

Clerical Officer: Major Abdul-Fattah Muhammed.

Platoon Commander: Captain Arkan Hussein Al-Tikriti.

Sniper Nest Officer: Taif Al-Doori, Izet Al-Doori’s nephew.

Regiment Commander: Staff Major Majid Jyad Nayif.

Operations Officer: Staff Lieutenant Colonel Ali.

The Battalions of the Second Brigade

 

The Fourth Battalion

“Security Battalion”

Headquarters: Near the former building of the Military Police Headquarters at Al-Nisoor Square adjacent to the highway between the palace and the airport; in front of Hayy Al-Yarmook and beside Hayy Al-Qadisiyeh.

Duties: Protects Saddam’s residence at Mak-hool which lies in the Beiji locale on the Mosul road leading to the village of Mis-hik whose name has been changed to Saddam’s Village. This is a fighting brigade that participated in the Fao offensive and endured heavy casualties but was later rebuilt. Consists of five platoons.

Commander: Brigadier General Saud Al-Tikriti.

 

The Sixth Battalion

"Combat Infantry Battalion"

Headquarters: Formerly at Hayy Al-Qadisiyeh towards the end of the minister’s residences on the highway connecting the palace to the airport.

Duties: to protect presidential residences in Mosul in front of Hayy Al-‘Arabi facing Ninevah Operoi Hotel in the forests. Consists of five platoons.

Commander: Brigadier General Muhammed Al-‘Eithawi.

 

The Eleventh Battalion

"Combat Infantry Battalion"

A newly established battalion.

Headquarters: At the Taji military base near the Ba’ath Square intersection inside the camp.

Duties: Protecting Baghdad from the Taji direction.

Commander: Colonel Sabih Al-Tikriti

Weaponry: endowed with RPG7s, Howitzers, BKCs and anti-aircraft guns attached to vehicles. Each soldier carries a Kalashnikov with 120 bullets. Most of the officers are from Tikrit and Beiji, and most of the rank and file are from the Anbar, Mosul and Salahul-Din provinces.

 

The Fourteenth Battalion

"Combat Battalion"

Headquarters: the end of Al-Rasheed military base just before the Training Academy.

Duties: Protecting Baghdad from the direction of Kut and Salman Pak.

Commander: Colonel Qutaibeh Al-Anbari.

 

The Fifteenth Battalion

"Spcial Forces Combat Battalion"

Headquarters: at Abu-Ghraib on the road leading to the Air Force School and the airport from the Abu-Ghraib’s direction.

Commander: Staff Lieutenant Colonel Sami Waheeb Al-Nassiri.

 

The Third Brigade

“Commanding Brigade”

Consists of 75 Officers and 2260 ranks

Headquarters: At Taji after Baghdad Gate at the highway intersection. Formerly called the People’s Army School.

Duties: an important and effective attacking brigade.

Commander: Brigadier General Muhammed Ali Hussein Al-Tikriti.

Staff Chemical Officer: Captain Majid Muhammed Sabi’ Al-Hayali: resides in Beiji.

 

The Battalions of the Third Brigade

 

The Third Battalion

"Combat Battalion"

Headquarters: Al-Dooreh on the Mahmoodieh road. Behind the old inspection point there is a minor road (2-3km) which leads to the headquarters.

Duties: This is a fighting battalion that executes emergency attack orders.

Commander: Al-Tikriti, resides in Baghdad.

Intelligence Officer: Major Ghassan Hmood Al-Tikriti.

Guidance Officer: Major Muhammed Al-‘Aboosh, originates from Mosul.

This battalion was destroyed in the Fao offensive and was later rebuilt.

 

The Ninth Battalion

"Security Battalion"

Headquarters: Near Al-Tharthar Lake. Consists of five platoons.

Duties: Protecting Saddam’s palaces at Tharthar and establishing inspection points and plain clothed patrols on the private roads leading to Tharthar from the direction of Tikrit, and the Habaniyeh Tourist City.

Commander: Staff Colonel Abdul-Karim Jasim Humeidi

 

The Tenth Battalion

"Combat Battalion"

Headquarters: Near the headquarters of the Third Brigade at Taji after Baghdad Gate from the direction of Mosul near the highway intersection. The building was formerly called the People’s Army School, and there now exists close by a company owned by the Ministry of Military Industry.

Duties: external maneuvers.

Commander: Brigadier General Muhammed Ali Hussein Al-Jibouri.

This battalion consists of seven platoons.

 

The Twelve Battalion

"Combat Battalion"

A recently established battalion.

Headquarters: On the way to Taji (Ba’ath Square inside the camp), immediately next to the Eleventh Battalion.

Duties: protecting Baghdad from the direction of Taji (same responsibilities as the Eleventh Battalion).

Commander: Lieutenant Colonel Shweish ‘Abbas Al-Nu’aimi

 

Vehicles used by the battalions

1-Nissam buses and Hino cars: about 100 for each battalion.

2-Landcruisers and Mercedes 280 models and Toyota pick-ups.

3-Mobile 106mm artillery (2 for each battalion).

 

Weaponry

1-Mobile 106mm Mortars (2 for each battalion).

2-Mortars 82mm (eight for each battalion).

3-Mortars 60mm (twelve for each battalion).

4-BKC (10 for each platoon).
