Following is the text of Brownback's statement: (Begin text) WASHINGTON -- Following Iraqi provocation of U.S. military planes over no-fly zones in Iraq, U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback today said that the U.S. must be prepared to deal with an increasingly defiant Saddam Hussein. "We should anticipate a number of engagements like this over the next several months as Saddam Hussein grows increasingly defiant of the will of the international community," Brownback said. "The proper response by the U.S. must be immediate and strong. I applaud the brave actions of American pilots in response to provocation. "Our continued focus must be the removal of this regime from power," Brownback said. Brownback cosponsored the Iraq Liberation Act, which provides $97 million in aid to anti-Saddam forces in Iraq, seeks the removal of Saddam from power, renews Congressional commitment to try Saddam and his regime for war crimes, and calls for a comprehensive U.S. policy towards a post-Saddam Iraq. Brownback is Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs. (End text)
