TEXT: SECRETARY OF DEFENSE COHEN MEETS WITH KING FAHD IN RIYADH
(Mideast peace process, Iraq's latest challenge to UN discussed) (230) Riyadh, Saudi Arabia -- "Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen had warm and productive meetings with King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah in Riyadh on November 3. They discussed recent progress in the Middle East peace process and Iraq's unacceptable decision to stop weapons inspections by the U.N. Special Commission," Pentagon Spokesman Ken Bacon said. Following is the text of Bacon's statement: (Begin text) U.S. Defense Secretary William S. Cohen had warm, productive meetings with King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah in Riyadh on Tuesday. They discussed recent progress in the Middle East peace process and Iraq's unacceptable decision to stop weapons inspections by the U.N. Special Commission. King Fahd stressed Saudi Arabia's strong friendship with the United States and pledged that the Kingdom will continue to support U.S. efforts to preserve regional security and stability. Crown Prince Abdullah praised American leadership in helping the United Nations to contain Iraq. Secretary Cohen and the Crown Prince discussed possible responses to Iraq's latest challenge to the U.N. Security Council. Based on his meetings, Cohen is confident that the United States will have the support it needs to take appropriate action to support the United Nations. (End text)
