(Will go to Middle East on that situation) (280) Washington -- Secretary of State Albright was set to leave late January 28 for Europe and the Middle East to discuss with allies and U.N. Security Council member states "a strong international response to Iraq's continued defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions," according to State Department Spokesman James Rubin. The Secretary will also stop in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza to further discuss U.S. proposals to put Israeli-Palestinian peace talks back on track, Rubin said. Following is the State Department text: (begin text) U.S. Department of State Office of the Spokesman January 28, 1998 STATEMENT BY JAMES P. RUBIN, SPOKESMAN Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright will travel to Europe and the Middle East, departing on January 28. The purpose of her trip will be to discuss with allies and U.N. Security Council member states a strong international response to Iraq's continued defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions. Secretary Albright will explain U.S. views on how to proceed to ensure Iraqi compliance. Another important component of the Secretary's mission will be to build on the President's recent meetings in Washington with Prime Minister Netanyahu and Chairman Arafat to put the IsraeliPalestinian negotiations back on track. The Secretary will travel to Paris, France, for meetings with Foreign Minister Vedrine on January 29; Madrid, Spain, for meetings with Russian Foreign Minister Primakov on January 30; and the United Kingdom, for meetings with Foreign Secretary Cook on January 31. She will then visit Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Egypt, returning to Washington on February 3. (end text)
