ARABIAN GULF (NWSA) -- USS George Washington (CVN 73), USS
Normandy (CG 60), USS Annapolis (SSN 760), USS Carney (DDG 64)
and USS Seattle (AOE 3) arrived on station Nov. 21 in the
Arabian Gulf.
Live news broadcasts have emphasized the Navy's forward
presence mission on a daily basis. In a live telephone interview
conducted today with MSNBC, RADM Michael G. Mullen, Commander
Cruiser Destroyer Group Two, on board USS George Washington
said, "We're really proud that President Clinton called on this
battle group along with Nimitz to show U.S. resolve. The
Navy really feels we played a big part in the potential
resolution of this situation. We are here to ensure that
sanctions are enforced and complied with fully."
George Washington pilots have been conducting flight
operations, along with Nimitz pilots, since arriving on station.
Mullen said there are 75 aircraft aboard the Nimitz and 77
aboard George Washington.
