TRANSCRIPT: ALBRIGHT Q&A ON PAKISTAN, IRAQ WITH REPORTERS
(SecState says Iraqi leader "ran into a brick wall") (360) Washington -- Secretary of State Albright told reporters November 12 that "Frankly, what Saddam Hussein tried to do was to drive a wedge through the coalition and the unity in the (U.N.) Security Council; but instead, he ran into a brick wall." On the four American businessmen who were killed in Pakistan, she said, "we offer our deepest condolences to the families of those that were shot. We are looking into what the circumstances were. We're working with the Pakistani Government, and we will leave no stone unturned." Asked if she will still visit Pakistan on her upcoming trip overseas, she replied, "That's my plan, yes." Following is the State Department transcript: (begin transcript) U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Office of the Spokesman November 12, 1997 REMARKS BY SECRETARY OF STATE MADELEINE K. ALBRIGHT AFTER HER SPEECH AT JOINT SERVICE OFFICERS' WIVES LUNCHEON Washington, D.C. ALBRIGHT: (In progress) Yes, we offer our deepest condolences to the families of those that were shot. We are looking into what the circumstances were. We're working with the Pakistani Government, and we will leave no stone unturned. QUESTION: Will you go to Pakistan? ALBRIGHT: That's my plan, yes. Q: Madame Secretary, a couple of hours ago, the Iraqi Foreign Minister said that if the Security Council votes yes, Iraq would expel the American inspectors attached to UNSCOM. Do you have a reaction to that? ALBRIGHT: Let me say that as I understand it, the Security Council is debating, or is in the process of voting a strong resolution that yet again makes clear the unity of the Security Council in its determination to make Saddam Hussein live up to his obligations. Frankly, what Saddam Hussein tried to do was to drive a wedge through the coalition and the unity in the Security Council; but instead, he ran into a brick wall. Q: As far as Pakistan goes, do you think the Kasi trial and the Pakistani attack were related? ALBRIGHT: I'm not going to speculate on that. Thank you. (end transcript)
