Iraq fires on Air Force F-16s
STUTTGART, Germany (AFNS) -- Two U.S. Air Force F-16s assigned to Operation Provide Comfort were fired on by Iraqi SA-6 surface to air missiles 10 Sept. The aircraft were flying near Gir Pahn, Iraq, in the Northern No-Fly Zone.
The pilots, part of 20 coalition aircraft in the air over Iraq at the time, saw one missile fired. The missile missed the U.S. aircraft.
While the incident is being evaluated by Operation Provide Comfort and the U.S. European Command, DOD officials note that the chance of further coalition strikes have not been ruled out. Operation Provide Comfort has very robust Rules of Engagement which allow its planes to attack sites that pose an active threat to aircraft supporting the operation. (Staff Sgt. Jim DeMoss, Air Force News Agency, contributed to this story.)
