U.S. HELICOPTERS DELIVER U.N. FOOD STOCKS IN IRAQ (Respond to UNHCR request) (230)
WASHINGTON -- In response to an unusually heavy snowfall which has blocked roads in northern Iraq, Operation Provide Comfort has assigned temporary U.S. Army helicopter airlift support to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for food deliveries to that country's refugee areas, the U.S. Defense Department announced January 7.
Department Spokesman Pete Williams told reporters that since January 3, the helicopters have moved 5.1 tons (4.6 metric tons) of flour, 4.45 tons (3.9 metric tons) of rice, 2.1 tons (1.8 metric tons) of cooking oil and three- quarters of a ton (.675 metric tons) of other food from a warehouse to three main distribution points.
"We expect the support to stop as soon as the roads are opened, probably in the next several days...," the spokesman added.
Williams said Operation Provide Comfort's mission now is to serve primarily as a deterrent force in the security zone of northern Iraq that was established during the relief operations.
Coalition forces continue to patrol by air north of the 36th parallel, from which Iraqi aircraft are prohibited. Williams reminded reporters that under an agreement signed by the coalition partners and the government of Turkey last week, the operation will be extended six months. NNNN
