New York, IRNA -- Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs of Iran Kazem Gharibabadi says Iran will outline its position on the snapback of sanctions on the country during a meeting with the European trio in Istanbul on Friday.
Speaking to IRNA on Tuesday, Gharibabadi said the talks follow recent contacts between the foreign ministers of the three European countries and the E.U. foreign policy chief with Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.
"We agreed to meet on Friday morning in Istanbul to discuss diplomatic issues and the matter of the snapback mechanism ... and naturally we will present our position," he said.
Gharibabadi strongly criticized any attempt to invoke the mechanism, describing it as "a completely unlawful measure."
He added, "The snapback mechanism has no legal basis. The J.C.P.O.A. has not been implemented for seven years, and after the U.S. withdrawal, the Europeans also suspended their obligations. What exactly do they now want to demand from Iran?"
The senior diplomat emphasized that Iran would use the Istanbul meeting to explain the risks involved in any such European move.
"We have already warned about the consequences of this action and will reiterate our position," he said, adding that Iran seeks to explore "mutual solutions to manage the situation."
