Tehran, IRNA -- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran has vehemently dismissed the unfounded accusations leveled against the country in the prolonged AMIA bombing case.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed that 31 years ago, on July 18, 1994, a building in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, was detonated.
The suspicious explosion was immediately steered onto a misguided path by elements affiliated with the Zionist regime, the ministry added.
This diversion, Iran stated, has had consequences, including the disruption of long-standing relations between Iran and Argentina.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry reiterated its transparent stance over the past three decades, condemning any act of terrorism, regardless of where or by whom it is committed.
Tehran has consistently stressed the need for a transparent probe into the suspicious incident, grounded in the principles of fair trial.
The statement declared Iran's complete rejection of the charges against its citizens, condemning the insistence of certain Argentine domestic circles to pressure the country's judiciary for trumped-up accusations and the issuance of seemingly judicial rulings against Iranian nationals.
Iran calls for the identification of the real masterminds and perpetrators of the explosion, the uncovering of the truth, and the establishment of justice, the statement noted.
Over the past 31 years, questions and ambiguities about the 1994 explosion have increased, and clear and irrefutable evidence and signs of the Zionist regime's influence and pressure on the Argentine judicial system to accuse Iranian citizens have become evident, the statement read.
The ministry elaborated the recurring changes in the judicial team handling the case, revelations of corruption among some judicial officials leading to their dismissal, resignations of judges, and even assassination attempts against them, all testify to a deliberate intention to steer the Argentine judicial system away from a transparent and fair investigation.
This, Iran said, is aimed at protecting the real perpetrators and masterminds of the explosion.
The statement also noted that, despite the unsubstantiated claims against its citizens, Iran, solely to safeguard bilateral relations and restore the reputation of Iranian citizens unjustly accused in this case, engaged in dialogue with relevant Argentine authorities at one point.
This led to an agreement inked in 2013. However, less than two years after its signing, the Argentine side unilaterally abrogated it, hindering a transparent process for uncovering the truth and identifying the actual instigators and perpetrators of the explosion.
The move, the statement noted, once again demonstrated that the designers of this case are not seeking the truth or justice.
The Ministry reiterated that the accusations against Iranian citizens are groundless.
Iran insists on the restoration of the reputation of the accused Iranian citizens, calling for putting an end to the show trial, added the statement.
The Islamic Republic expects the Argentine judicial authorities to conduct the proceedings transparently, justly, and free from politicization and the undue influence of third parties, it said.
Tehran reserves its legal and legitimate rights, in accordance with international law, to respond to any inappropriate and baseless action against its nationals, and will act accordingly, the statement noted.
