Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei says any attempt to trigger the so-called snapback mechanism to reimpose UN sanctions amounts to a confrontational move that will draw an appropriate response from Tehran.
"In view of the recent developments, resorting to the snapback mechanism is baseless and lacks legal, political, and ethical basis more than ever," Baghaei said at his weekly press conference in Tehran on Monday.
He added that the mechanism is merely an instrumentalization of a provision that was included in UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorses the 2015 nuclear agreement, and lacks any justification.
He emphasized that Iran is still a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and scaled down its commitments only in response to the other party's gross violation of its obligations enshrined in the nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
The three European parties to the JCPOA - Britain, France and Germany - also blatantly violated their JCPOA obligations, he noted.
Baghaei, however, explained that Iran holds talks with the European troika to safeguard national interests.
"If the European parties had fulfilled their commitments, we would not have been facing such conditions. Certainly, if they had fulfilled [their obligations], Iran would not have resorted to its right to reduce its commitments," he emphasized.
He urged the E3 to accept the responsibility for their lack of commitment, arguing that resorting to the snapback mechanism means that the Europeans do not consider a role for themselves in the continuation of diplomacy over Iran's nuclear program.
Germany's 'incorrect' support for Israel's aggression gross violation of intl. law
The Iranian spokesman criticized the instrumental and selective use of international bodies to exert pressure on certain countries, saying the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is not an exception in this regard.
He said Germany hosts US nuclear weapons and aircraft capable of carrying nuclear warheads, which clearly violates the European country's commitments under the NPT.
He noted that a significant portion of the US weapons of mass destruction and nuclear arsenal is deployed in Germany, which is a "clear indication of this country's violation of international commitments."
"However, the IAEA keeps silent vis-à-vis such cases and pursues a completely selective approach. In contrast, Iran's peaceful nuclear program is not only criticized but has also been the target of military aggression," Baghaei pointed out.
He slammed Germany's "incorrect and inappropriate" stance in support of the Israeli regime's acts of aggression against Iran, saying the German government bears international responsibility as its support constitutes a clear breach of international law.
