The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held a special meeting on Monday regarding Israel's attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. China's permanent representative to the IAEA Li Song stated that China condemns Israel's military action against Iran, opposes armed attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities, rejects violations of Iran's sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, and opposes actions that further escalate tensions or widen the conflict, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Li noted that Israel's military action against Iran caused damage to Iran's nuclear facilities and casualties, undermined the political and diplomatic process of resolving the Iranian nuclear issue, undermined global efforts to uphold the international nuclear non-proliferation regime, and had a highly negative impact on regional peace, security, and stability.
Li emphasized that the renewed escalation of tensions in the Middle East serves no one's interests, and innocent civilians cannot bear another humanitarian disaster. China is gravely concerned about the current developments and their impact on prospects for diplomacy. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi had phone calls with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, urging all parties to avoid the escalation of the conflict, prevent the region from falling into greater turmoil.
Li also stressed that, regardless of how the situation evolves, China maintains that political and diplomatic channels are the only viable solution to the Iranian nuclear issue, and opposes the use of force and illegal unilateral sanctions. He stated that China supports the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. China will continue to uphold an objective and fair stance, actively promote peace and dialogue, advance the political and diplomatic resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue, and assist in reaching a solution that accommodates the legitimate concerns of all parties. China also supports the IAEA in fulfilling its duties impartially and constructively in this regard, Li noted.
During the meeting, IAEA member states expressed serious concerns over the current developments, with developing countries strongly condemning Israel in their statements. All parties stressed that diplomacy and dialogue remain the only way to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue and called on the international community to work together to de-escalate the situation.
