The Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned Austria's chargé d'affaires to Tehran to protest an "irresponsible and provocative" claim by the European country's domestic intelligence agency about Tehran's peaceful nuclear program.

Michaela Pacher was summoned by the Head of the First Office of the Iranian Foreign Ministry's West Europe Department, Alireza Molaqadimi, on Friday.

In its annual report on global threats, Austria's domestic intelligence service (DSN) claimed on May 26 that Iran is actively pursuing a nuclear weapons program and expanding its missile capabilities.

Molaqadimi rejected the baseless claim, arguing that it is in complete contradiction to numerous reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

He said Iran's nuclear program completely complies with the country's legal and international commitments as per the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

He condemned the "irresponsible and provocative" move by Austria's domestic intelligence service to question the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program without any evidence and called for an official explanation from the Austrian government in this regard.

The Austrian diplomat, for his part, said she will convey Tehran's protest to her government.

Earlier on Friday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei also rejected the "false and baseless" report by Austria's domestic intelligence agency, calling on Vienna to provide an explanation for leveling "irresponsible" accusations at Tehran.

Baghaei said the report is solely produced to create "media hype" against the Islamic Republic and thus it "lacks any validity or credibility."

Austria's claim comes as Iran and the United States have been engaged in indirect negotiations, mediated by Oman, since April to find a replacement to the 2015 nuclear agreement - formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Iran showed the peaceful nature of its nuclear program to the world by signing the landmark deal with six world powers in 2015.

The JCPOA was derailed in 2018 by the US, which unilaterally walked out of the accord and launched its so-called campaign of maximum pressure against Iran.

Iran now wants guarantees that the US will remove all the sanctions and won't again unilaterally derail the new deal.
