Iran has awarded a contract to a consortium of domestic companies for manufacturing the first homegrown jackup rig, which it plans to use in drilling projects in its massive oil and gas sector.

The official IRNA news agency said in a Sunday report that the construction arm of Iran's elite military force, the IRGC, would lead the project to build the jackup drilling rig in shipyards in the south of the country.

The consortium will also include the Industrial Projects Management of Iran (IPMI) and Iran Marine Industrial Company (SADRA), the report said.

The head of Iran's High Council of Marine Industries described the project as key to Iran's efforts to localize the manufacturing of sensitive and technologically complicated equipment needed in its petroleum sector.

"Manufacturing this advanced marine equipment is very critical and strategic given the current situation of the country's oil and gas industry, especially in the Persian Gulf," said Mohammad Mehdi Salari.

Salari said the success of the project would open the road for more investment in similar projects and would lead to a boom in the Iranian marine industries.

Jackup rigs are used in offshore drilling projects where shallow waters require the use of legs and columns to attach the platforms to the seabed. The mobile self-elevating units are more effective than traditional floating rigs and can be transported to various locations using heavy ships.

Iran has introduced various projects in recent years to source the equipment it needs in its oil and gas industries from domestic suppliers and manufacturers.

The efforts have come amid sanctions imposed by the US that have restricted Iran's access to international investment and technology.
