On April 18, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will hold talks in Moscow with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi. The meeting will come as a continuation of the regular dialogue between the foreign ministers of both countries. Previously, they met on February 25, when Sergey Lavrov was paying a working visit to Tehran. On November 30, 2024, the ministers talked over the phone.

During the upcoming talks, the ministers will discuss a wide range of current regional and international issues, including those related to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iranian nuclear programme, and developments in Syria, the South Caucasus, and the Caspian area. It is intended to consider the plans to build up bilateral trade and economic ties with account taken of the 18th meeting of the Standing Russian-Iranian Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation scheduled for April 23-25 in Moscow, as well as the new basic interstate treaty between Russia and Iran and the agreements reached following Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's visit to Moscow on January 17.

Despite the sanctions pressure, Russian-Iranian relations have been traditionally characterised as a partnership. The parties continue their intense and substantive political dialogue, including at the top level. Both countries' foreign ministers, speakers of parliament and heads of other government agencies and organisations, including financial and economic ones, maintain regular bilateral contacts.

We intend to expand our mutually beneficial ties with Iran even further in the interests of regional stability and international security. We hope for a progressive strengthening of the entire system of multifaceted strategic collaboration with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
