Iran's foreign minister says the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) must uphold its technical mandate, avoid political approaches, and resist the pressure from the United States and its European allies.

Abbas Araghchi made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of Russia on Monday.

It was the second phone call between the two ministers in a week and came ahead of an upcoming meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, where the US and the European troika - Britain, France, and Germany - are expected to introduce a resolution against Iran over its cooperation with the agency.

The Iranian minister said Tehran has always pursued a "constructive and responsible" approach in its engagement with the IAEA.

Araghchi said Iran has come up with initiatives and held diplomatic consultations with regional countries with the purpose of preserving peace and stability.

He emphasized that such a process should continue with the participation of all parties involved.

Tehran has warned that it will conduct a "fundamental review" of its engagement with the UN nuclear watchdog if the 35-member Board of Governors adopts a new resolution against Iran.

"I hope they (E3) choose rationality and do not formally present the resolution, but if they do, Iran will certainly conduct a fundamental review of its policies," Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said on Sunday.

Following the June attacks by Israel and the United States on Iranian nuclear sites, Iran suspended its cooperation with the UN watchdog as per a law adopted by Parliament.

Tensions escalated as Iranian officials said the IAEA effectively provided cover for the strikes by declaring the country in violation of its non‑proliferation obligations shortly before the bombardment and then failing to condemn the aggression.

Russia ready to continue close coordination with Iran: Lavrov

The Russian foreign minister, for his part, welcomed the establishment of a framework for regional cooperation and expressed Moscow's readiness to continue close coordination with Tehran.

Lavrov pointed to Russia's efforts in the United Nations to safeguard the principles of the UN Charter.

On the issue of Palestine, Lavrov said Russia supports the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. He said Moscow rejects any action that would disregard the rights of the Palestinian people.
