Tehran, IRNA -- Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna says he doubts Britain, France, and Germany—collectively known as the E3 or European Troika— have the ability to play a positive role concerning Iran's nuclear program.
Mikhail Ulyanov made the remarks in a message on his X network on Wednesday, emphasizing that "Russia, China, and Iran are the key players regarding the Iranian nuclear program, and they largely determine how the situation progresses."
He continued by saying that the European Troika has the right to express their views and opinions in this regard, but their ability to play a positive role is highly questionable.
The statement followed a trilateral meeting between the foreign ministers of Britain, France, and Germany on the sidelines of the G7 summit, with the top German diplomat calling on Iran to ensure the necessary transparency, without referring to Tehran's constant cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
This senior Russian diplomat has repeatedly criticized the E3 for its stance toward Iran, saying that resolving issues surrounding the Iranian nuclear file is possible only through mutual and respectful dialogue.
"We are closely following any changes in the approach of Western countries. At present, it seems that they do not have a clear understanding of how to interact with Iran and are still relying on blackmail and ultimatums, while such methods are ineffective against Iran," he told a Russian news agency.
Russia and China, the two permanent members of the UN Security Council, had previously announced that with the expiration of Resolution 2231 on October 18, 2024, the 2015 nuclear agreement (JCPOA) effectively ended, and from now on, the IAEA will only examine issues related to Iran within the framework of the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.
