Foreign Ministry: Israeli claims of Iran's assassination plot in Mexico are 'ridiculous'
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Nov 10, 2025
Tehran, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei has dismissed as "ridiculous" allegations that Iran attempted to assassinate the Israeli ambassador to Mexico, saying that the Israeli regime seeks to damage the Islamic Republic's friendly relations with other countries.
"Our embassy stated that we found this allegation so absurd and ridiculous that we did not even think it required an official response from the spokesperson," Baqaei said during his weekly press briefing in Tehran on Monday, responding to an IRNA question.
He added that the Israeli regime has previously made similar accusations against Iran, citing as an example the attacks against Jewish targets in Australia earlier this year, which prompted Canberra to sever ties with Tehran.
Despite official statements by Australian police rejecting any connection to Iran, Israel has continued to insist on Tehran's involvement, the spokesperson noted.
Baqaei said the same pattern is being repeated with Mexico, where Israel claims that an attempted assassination of its ambassador took place in 2024. He added that there are specific reasons behind the Israeli regime's decision to focus on the North American country this time.
"One of the reasons is to take revenge on the Mexican public, which has openly voiced its protest against the genocide in Gaza in recent months," Baqaei said, adding that the Israeli regime also seeks to undermine Iran's friendly relations with other nations.
"Efforts to destroy Iran's friendly ties with other countries are among the schemes pursued by the Zionist regime. Therefore, the entire claim is fabricated. As you witnessed, both the Mexican Foreign Ministry and the country's intelligence agencies issued statements dismissing the allegation altogether," he noted.
Trump's admission on Iran war registered as UN Security Council document
On November 6, US President Donald Trump told reporters that he "was in charge of" Israel's June 13 attack on Iran, contradicting Washington's previous claims that Israel had acted unilaterally.
Commenting on Trump's statement, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, "This explicit admission to committing an international crime places full responsibility on the US government."
According to Baqaei, Iran immediately registered Trump's remarks as an official document at the United Nations and its Security Council, as part of Tehran's efforts to record the crimes committed by the US and Israel during their war of aggression in the summer.
"Undoubtedly, this admission constitutes clear evidence of the United States' complicity in this act of aggression and will be cited in any court of law," he noted, adding Iran is seriously pursuing the documentation of the US-Israeli military aggression, examining all available international mechanisms to seek justice and file a complaint against Washington.
"International Law Under Assault: Aggression and Defense" Conference
The spokesperson said the event will be held by the Foreign Ministry's Institute for Political and International Studies in Tehran on Sunday, and will bring together legal and international relations experts from various countries.
Baqaei explained that the US-Israeli military aggression against Iran will be a main topic, but the broader aim is to "draw the global community's attention to a trend that could undermine all the standards and norms of international law."
"The US-Israeli action was not directed solely at a single sovereign country, but against the very principles and norms that have underpinned international coexistence for the past eighty years," he said, noting that the action was a clear example of unilateralism which is also pursued in other parts of the world, including in the Caribbean and Latin America.
NATO chief's anti-Iran remarks dismissed
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson dismissed the NATO Secretary-General's accusations that Iran and Russia are undermining international law, saying the remarks are nothing more than a ridiculous distraction and an unfounded allegation against Iran.
He added that Iran itself has been a victim of unlawful measures by the US and some other member states of the Western military alliance, while the United States and these countries continue to violate international law — a pattern that has become repetitive for them.
Lifting sanctions a legitimate demand of Iranian people
Commenting on Trump's remarks that Iran had asked for lifting sanctions, Baqaei said the removal of the sanctions "is a legitimate demand of the Iranian people, not a favor from the United States."
The sanctions imposed over the past decades have unfairly affected every Iranian, he said. Given their impact on fundamental rights of the Iranians, the measures constitute a crime against humanity, he added.
Rights reports inform domestic and international audiences
On annual reports issued by Iran on human rights violations in the US and UK, the spokesperson explained that these countries are highlighted because they claim to uphold human rights internationally but often use the concept to pressure independent states.
Providing evidence that their claims are hypocritical is a global responsibility, he said, adding that the use of human rights as a pressure tool is widespread, making these reports valuable not only for domestic awareness but also for international audiences.
Iraq's elections
On Iraq's general elections, scheduled for November 11, the Iranian diplomat expressed hope that the vote would benefit the Iraqi people and contribute to strengthening stability and security across West Asia.
"Iraq is a very important country for us. It is a Muslim neighbor with close ties to Iran. Security, stability, and development in this country are of paramount importance to us," Baqaei said, emphasizing that Tehran-Baghdad friendly relations will continue regardless of the elections results.
He also condemned the US for pressuring Iran-linked groups to exclude them from the elections, saying that the vote plays a crucial role in determining the fate of the Iraqi people, and that any foreign interference is unacceptable and condemned.
"The US interference is clearly harmful. Past experience shows that wherever Washington has intervened, the outcomes have been detrimental to peace and security in that country and the entire region," he added.
UK refuses to release Iranian prisoner under flimsy pretexts
Baqaei also commented on a letter from Armenian-Iranian MPs urging Britain to free Iranian national, Richard John, who has been imprisoned in the UK for over 20 years.
"He was eligible for release under a pardon in 2011-2012, but British authorities have repeatedly delayed it on various pretexts. His conditions are poor. He has an elderly mother in Iran and needs medical treatment," the spokesperson said.
He noted that Richard John has retained only Iranian citizenship, and that Iran has offered his immediate return, with its embassy seriously pursuing the case.
Caspian Sea littoral states' governors' meeting
According to the Foreign Ministry spokesperson, the International Conference of Governors of the Caspian Sea Littoral States will be held in Iran's northern city of Rasht on November 18-19.
He said that the meeting, the first of its kind and initiated by Iran, aims to strengthen economic relations among the Caspian Sea littoral states.
Iran, Saudi Arabia determined to continue positive ties
"Over the past two years, our diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia have been steadily improving, and both sides are committed to advancing this positive momentum across all areas," Baqaei said, citing visits by senior Iranian officials to Saudi Arabia for bilateral talks as well as their participation in international events, as indications that Tehran and Riyadh are effectively managing their relations at various levels.
Normalization of ties only emboldens Israel
Responding to a question about Kazakhstan's reported accession to the "Abraham Accords" that calls for normalization of ties with Israel, Baqaei said: "A regime committing the ongoing genocide in Gaza and acts of aggression against regional countries deserves no recognition or normalization."
He added that normalization only emboldens Israel to persist in its violations of international law and crimes in Gaza and elsewhere in the region.
Regarding Kazakhstan, Baqaei noted that the country has maintained relations with Israel for more than three decades, and its latest announcement appears to be a political gesture aimed at masking Israel's isolation and diverting attention from the tragedy in Gaza.
Iran ready to resolve Afghanistan-Pakistan dispute
Baqaei said that Iran is deeply concerned about any escalation of tension along its eastern borders, not only because of proximity, but also because Pakistan and Afghanistan are Muslim neighbors with long-standing historical, cultural, and religious ties to Tehran.
"Any insecurity in the eastern borders affects the entire region's stability," he said.
Since the beginning of tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, Iran has urged both sides to exercise restraint and offered to help resolve the dispute, he added.
US military presence in West Asia
In response to a question about Iran's reaction to the renewed US military presence in Syria and its impact on regional stability, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said: "We have always maintained that any US military presence in regional countries only leads to greater instability and insecurity. In Syria, this presence has long served as a cover for looting the Syrian people's resources and supporting unrest. It now clearly serves only the interests of the occupying and destabilizing Zionist regime."
Americans reject their country's support for Israel
Commenting on the election of New York's Muslim mayor, Baqaei said that while US elections are a domestic matter, the messages emerging from them are noteworthy.
"One clear message is that American public opinion strongly opposes their government's policies toward the region, particularly its support for the Zionist regime," he said, emphasizing that the American people do not support wasting their country's wealth and reputation on a genocidal regime.
