Iran says its natural gas production from the world's largest gas field, South Pars in the Persian Gulf, has reached a new record despite continued restrictions on its access to foreign investment and technology due to sanctions.

The CEO of Pars Oil & Gas Company, a state-run firm working in the South Pars gas field, said on Monday that output from the field had reached 718 million cubic meters (mcm) per day.

Touraj Dehghani said that gas production from South Pars had increased by 5 mcm per day in recent days after several wells located near the maritime border with Qatar came on line.

"That is the result of months of effort by the company's expert staff," Dehghani said.

He said that Pars Oil had added six platforms to its production facilities in the Persian Gulf in the past year, bringing to 10 the total number of offshore rigs operated by the firm in the region.

The Iranian Oil Ministry official added that output from South Pars had grown by 25 mcm per day over the past 12 months and is expected to rise by another 5 mcm by March with the completion of six additional wells.

Dehghani said the increased production has helped Iran maintain its position as the world's third-largest gas producer, after the United States and Russia.

South Pars, which is shared between Iran and Qatar, is responsible for 70% of Iran's natural gas supply and 40% of the feedstock needed in the country's gasoline production sector. It covers 40 offshore drilling rigs, hundreds of wells, and thousands of kilometers of underwater pipelines across 28 development phases.

In early March, Iran awarded some $17 billion worth of contracts to domestic companies for a major pressure-boosting project in South Pars to extend the lifespan of the field by 20 years.

The investment followed expert warnings that declining pressure could cause a sharp drop in output of the field in the coming years.

That comes on top of a project to drill a total of 35 infill wells to decrease well spacing and accelerate the recovery of oil and gas from South Pars.

Contractors said over the weekend that production had begun from the fourth infill well, with a daily capacity of 1.8 million mcm.
