Unidentified attackers have claimed the lives of two volunteer security forces in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan.
The Public Relations Office of the Quds Base of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)'s Ground Force reported the incident in a statement on Saturday.
It identified the fatalities as local Sunni members of the Islamic Republic's Basij volunteer force.
The fatalities, the statement said, were caused as the victims were accompanying a security detail travelling along the highway linking the province's city of Khash and the provincial capital Zahedan.
The victims were named as Esmaeil Shaverzi and Mokhtar Shahouzehi, who had received serious injuries during the attack.
Sistan and Baluchestan, which shares a border with Pakistan, has long witnessed terrorist violence against both civilians and security personnel.
Iranian authorities have repeatedly traced the roots of such attacks to foreign intelligence networks backing terrorist groups active in the region.
The threats facing the regional security environment has made a strong and continuous police and military presence indispensable, often requiring swift counterterrorism operations.
In late August, local security units eliminated at least eight terrorists linked to a deadly assault on law enforcement earlier in the month. That attack had claimed the lives of five officers after gunmen ambushed two police patrols in Iranshahr County's Daman District.
Responsibility for the assault was later claimed by the terrorist organization Jaish al-Adl, a group notorious for staging cross-border operations from Pakistani territory.
