Iran's top security official has expressed gratitude on the part of the Islamic Republic towards Russia for the latter's support at the United Nations Security Council for Tehran's rightful stance in the face of Western states' attempts at re-imposing coercive economic measures on the country.
Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani made the remarks in the Iranian capital on Tuesday, meeting with visiting Russian presidential envoy Alexander Lavrentiev.
Larijani, who also serves as a senior adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, commended Russia's consistent cooperation with Iran at the Council.
He was referring, among other things, to the Russian diplomatic mission to the UN's recent categorical rejection of the "snapback" of nuclear-related sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
The support saw Russia and China consistently denounce and refuse to recognize restoration of the sanctions that had been triggered by the UK, France, and Germany's recourse to the mechanism in August.
The trio had triggered the "snapback," reiterating their allegations of "diversion" against Iran's peaceful nuclear energy program.
Tehran and its allies have invariably reminded absence of any evidence proving the allegations. They have also noted that the troika's own non-commitment to a 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran has robbed them of all moral and legal grounds to try to restore the sanctions.
Larijani and the Russian official reviewed coordination between Tehran and Moscow across international forums, besides addressing various regional developments.
The envoy briefed the Iranian official on the latest situation in the region and outlined prospects for stronger regional cooperation.
The meeting came days after Larijani met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, delivering a direct message from Ayatollah Khamenei.
