Iran has called on South Korea, as the new president of the UN Security Council, to act as a "responsible" government that defends right and truth, considering the illegitimate move of the three European states in activating the snapback mechanism against Tehran.

Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi made the remarks in a post on X on Monday, following his meeting with the South Korean Ambassador, Kim Junpyo.

"It was emphasized in the meeting that reimposing sanctions during South Korea's presidency of the UN Security Council would seriously damage the country's international image," he noted.

South Korea will take over the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council in September 2025 after Panama.

In his message, Gharibabadi also referred to a separate meeting with Grigory Lukyantsev, Director of the Department for Multilateral Cooperation in Human Rights at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who is in Tehran to participate in the tenth round of bilateral human rights talks between Iran and Russia.

He noted that there are "many capacities and opportunities to promote bilateral, multilateral and international cooperation, especially in international forums, on human rights issues."

"While criticizing the instrumental use and double standards of the West in the field of human rights, it was decided to pursue joint initiatives and activities in this area," he added.

In another meeting with the ambassadors of Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark), Gharibabadi underlined that the sides mainly discussed the illegal actions of the three European countries in initiating the snapback process and "the need to pay attention to diplomacy and avoid provoking actions by these three countries."

The snapback refers to the automatic reinstatement of UN sanctions against Iran. It is a mechanism under UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers.

On August 29, France, Germany, and Britain (E3) triggered the countdown for the automatic return of UN sanctions, including a comprehensive arms embargo and major banking and shipping restrictions on Iran.
