Iran and Russia are planning to hold price negotiations on a major gas supply deal that allows Russia to export sizable volumes of natural gas to Iran, according to remarks by Iran's ambassador to Moscow.

Kazem Jalali said on Monday that a Russian delegation will travel to Iran next week to discuss final aspects of the gas export agreement between the two countries.

Jalali said Iran will start importing gas from Russia as soon as the price issues are resolved, adding that the supply would boost Iran's ability to respond to demand for gas in its industries in the upcoming winter.

"In the first phase of the agreement, Iran will import 5 million cubic meters (mcm) per day of gas from Russia for which it has created the required infrastructure, and we are only waiting for a pricing agreement," said the envoy while in Tehran to attend a major petrochemical industry forum.

He said, however, that the Russian gas supply to Iran would increase to 55 million mcm per day in the second phase of the agreement and to 110 million mcm per day in the third phase.

Tehran and Moscow signed a memorandum of understanding on Russian gas transfer to Iran in June last year.

In statements made after the signing of the deal, Iranian authorities described it as a major achievement and said that the deal would make Iran a major gas supply hub in the region.

Russia has been facing an oversupply of natural gas since early 2022, when its exports to Europe came under sanctions because of the war in Ukraine.

Iran is the second largest gas producer in the world after Russia and has its own exports via pipelines to Turkey and Iraq, while it is also involved in gas swap deals involving Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.
