Foreign Ministry spokesperson terms Araghchi's meeting with EU foreign policy chief as 'useful'
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Sep 8, 2025
Tehran, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has described Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's meeting with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas as useful.
"We see it a duty to take advantage of every opportunity to advance the country's interests, express our demands, and warn about the consequences of the three European countries' misuse of the Snapback Mechanism to reinstate the terminated UN Security Council resolutions," Baghaei told IRNA addressing his regular press conference on Monday.
He expressed hope that the Europeans will revise their approaches by properly understanding the consequences of a confrontational stance.
IAEA acknowledges the need to consider Iran's views
Commenting on Iran's stance toward the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report, Baghaei said that Iran has reviewed the report and will convey its positions to the body and the member states of the Board of Governors in a note.
"We expected a fair report that would take into account the facts on the ground," he stressed
He clarified that the fact on the ground is nothing but the illegal and aggressive attack by the Israeli regime and the United States on Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities.
The Iranian diplomat described this action as so heinous and unprecedented that it compelled the IAEA to address the issue in detail and clarify its position to prevent such violations of international law in the future.
During their negotiations with IAEA officials, Iranian negotiators raised several important topics, including the security of Iran's nuclear facilities, the law passed by Parliament, and the considerations of the Supreme National Security Council.
The US openly declares its hostility towards the UN Charter
In response to a question about renaming the US Department of Defense to the Department of War, he said the United States is explicitly declaring its confrontation with and hostility towards the UN Charter and internationally accepted principles and norms.
He reminded that the UN Charter, established in 1945 to prevent the recurrence of war, enshrines rules including Article 2(4), which explicitly prohibits the use of force in international relations between states.
He also urged the international community to beware of the fact that apparently, the US administration does not believe in the principles and objectives of the UN Charter or the rule of law, and intends to pursue a more aggressive approach towards various countries.
The recent accusations by Britain are baseless and a continuation of London's traditional policy
Regarding the accusations made by Britain against Iran, Baghaei said these accusations are not new; similar allegations were previously made by the British government, to which we responded in a statement.
On one hand, the British government's history of interventionist actions, including its support for the Israeli regime against Iran, is crystal clear. On the other hand, they continue to level accusations without ever providing even the slightest document or evidence to prove their claims.
The timing for the next round of talks with the IAEA has not been set
The third round of talks just concluded on Saturday, and the results of these discussions are currently under review in Tehran by the relevant authorities, he said.
"We are waiting for the final assessment to be completed," he stressed.
Kallas's remarks reflect the West's perspective of "viewing rivals as enemies"
In response to a question regarding the remarks made by by the European Union's foreign policy chief that the alignment of China, Russia, and Iran poses a threat to the rules-based international order, Baghaei said the point raised by Kallas should be examined within the framework of the Western countries' approach of viewing all rivals as enemies.
Therefore, given the record of the European Union and many European countries, these claims hold no credibility in the international community, he reiterated.
These remarks are nothing but a continuation of the same adversarial approach toward rivals and countries that seek progress based on their national interests, while safeguarding their independence and national sovereignty against the interventions of the United States and Western countries, Baghaei stated.
President Pezeshkian will attend the UNGA meeting
Regarding the US restrictions on Iran's participation in the UN General Assembly meeting, Baghaei said this is a clear violation of international law, particularly the headquarters agreement, which clearly outlines the obligations of the host country.
Iran plans to use the opportunity of the UNGA session, as in previous years, to articulate the its positions at the international level, he said.
President Pezeshkian is scheduled to attend this session, which coincides with the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, he stated.
Given the developments that have taken place and are still ongoing in the region, including the issue of genocide in Palestine, it is expected that the most important agenda for the international community and the United Nations should be addressing this tragedy and making an international demand to stop the genocide and prosecute and punish its perpetrators, he reiterated.
US threatens to cut all contributions to IAEA if Iran's resolution is adopted
Commenting on Iran's decision to submit a draft resolution to the IAEA General Conference, Baghaei said the resolution proposed by Iran reiterates a principle that has long existed in international law and according to IAEA regulations.
Based on international law and IAEA resolutions, any attack or threat of attack against a country's peaceful nuclear facilities is prohibited, he added.
Such an action is considered a threat to international peace and security and involves the UN Security Council, he noted.
Accordingly, the draft resolution that Iran intends to present at the IAEA General Conference, scheduled to be held in Vienna in late September, emphasizes the prohibition of any attack or threat against the peaceful nuclear facilities of countries, the Iranian diplomat said.
The United States' opposition to this resolution demonstrates its blatant disregard for international law and clearly reflects its adoption of a policy of intimidation, he noted.
Iran's decision to withdraw from the NPT is made at the highest level
In response to a question about the weapons of mass destruction of the Israeli regime and its non-membership in international disarmament agreements, as well as Iran's Parliament's proposal to withdraw from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), he said
Obviously, the Israeli regime is the only obstacle to the realization of a West Asian region free of weapons of mass destruction, he said.
It is the only actor in the region that has not joined the NPT and the only regime that pursues the possession of weapons of mass destruction, he emphasized.
Furthermore, the Israeli regime has committed genocide, is founded on terrorism and occupation, currently occupies the territory of two countries, and continuously attacks other countries, he added.
So, this regime poses a serious and immediate threat to regional and global peace and security, he noted.
"The demand of all countries in the region, at all conferences related to disarmament and arms control meetings, is to compel the Israeli regime to accept international documents and hold it accountable for its weapons of mass destruction," Baghaei reiterated.
Araghchi is to visit Tunisia
Regarding the Foreign Minister's visit to regional countries, including Egypt, he said visiting regional countries is part of Iran's policy to strengthen cooperation and hold consultations on bilateral issues, as well as regional and international developments.
Accordingly, a visit to Egypt has taken place in the past and may also occur in the future, he said.
He also noted that Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to visit Tunisia.
No negotiations will be held on defense capabilities
Elaborating on the potential consequences of the reinstatement of UNSC sanctions, Baghaei said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is obligated to utilize diplomatic tools to prevent any move that counters the national interest of Iran and to strive with full force to maximize the country's benefits.
He stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran will under no circumstances negotiate on its defense capabilities and capacities.
"This is a definite and inviolable principle," he underlined.
Denial of visas for Palestinian officials is complicity with Israeli to erase Palestine from UN agenda
In response to a question about the US action of denial of visas for officials of the Palestinian Authority, he said the US act is contrary to its obligations under the Headquarters Agreement.
A similar incident occurred in 1988 when the Palestine Liberation Organization was barred from attending UN meetings, and member countries decided to hold the session in another location, he added.
This experience shows that the host government is committed to providing the necessary facilities for all countries to participate in UN meetings, including the UNGA sessions, he stated.
Israel has no good intentions toward minorities or regional countries
Reacting to the conference held by the Israeli regime in Tel Aviv aimed at providing advice and assistance to ethnic minorities in Syria and Iraq, Baghaei said the regime's move is like seeking Jeffrey Epstein's opinion on the victims of human trafficking.
The Israeli regime's approach toward the region, regardless of ethnicity, religion, sect, or race, is clear and consistent, he stressed.
The past experiences show that the Israeli regime has never discriminated in its attacks and strikes against countries in the region, he said.
Developments in Syria, Lebanon, and occupied Palestine, including attacks on the infrastructure of neighboring countries, confirm the fact that the Israeli regime has no good intentions toward the regional countries or their ethnic and religious groups, he warned.
Iran's support for Venezuela is based on int'l law
Iran's support for Venezuela is based on the principles of international law and an awareness of the dangers posed by unilateralism and bullying, Baghaei said.
The erosion of international legal norms and the principles of the UN Charter will not benefit the majority of the international community, he added.
The US' actions in the Caribbean against Venezuela and its pressure on certain other countries in the region have consequences for the entire international legal system, he stated.
Iran and Venezuela have long-standing relations based on mutual respect and shared interests, he said adding that both nations share common interests in preserving and upholding international law and the UN Charter.
Lebanon must be able to rely on its own capabilities to resist the Israeli regime's aggression
Elaborating on Iran's position against the disarmament of Hezbollah, Baghaei said Iran's stance on the weapons of the resistance has been clearly expressed.
We believe that all parts of the Lebanese society and its governance and political system must make the best decisions regarding the country's security, taking into account all aspects and the context in which they operate, he said.
In a situation where the Israeli regime has, in practice, shown that it adheres to no rules or laws, and the United States acts unilaterally and entirely in the interest of the regime, all regional countries must be able to rely on their own capabilities and capacities to resist the Israeli aggression, he added.
