Tehran, IRNA -- Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned against both downplaying and exaggerating the impact of sanctions on Iran, saying a balanced and pragmatic approach is essential to managing their consequences and seizing opportunities.
Speaking at the National Conference on Investment Capabilities of Iran's Free and Special Economic Zones on Saturday, Araghchi said the country is facing "multi-layered, complex, and extensive sanctions" that have left clear marks on the economy, foreign trade, and people's lives.
"This is a reality that should not be denied," he noted.
However, he stressed that portraying sanctions as an apocalyptic situation that leaves no choice but surrender is equally misleading.
"From the outset, the architects of sanctions sought to paralyze Iran, even naming them 'crippling sanctions,'" he said.
"Yet, the reality is that Iran has stood firm. This does not mean sanctions have had no effect or imposed no pressure, but two mistakes must be avoided: indifference to their consequences, which leads to neglecting the need for planning and lost opportunities, and exaggeration or submission to them."
Araghchi emphasized that the right path is realism, pragmatism, and effective management, which he explained as recognizing the pressures while also making use of opportunities that emerge in such circumstances.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the foreign minister said that Iran needs a new framework of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
"Fortunately, negotiations with the Agency have already begun, and even today, talks are ongoing with the aim of reaching a new framework," he added.
