Tehran, IRNA -- Russia's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna has accused the United States and its European allies, Britain, France, and Germany—collectively known as the E3 or European Troika—of harming diplomatic efforts to resolve Iran's nuclear issue.
In an interview with Press TV on Sunday, Mikhail Ulyanov said the US and E3 have politicized Iran's nuclear program, as their consistent actions on the issue have been worsening the situation.
"Since its establishment, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) remains a technical body but over the last 15 years, especially after Israel bombed a Syrian facility claiming it was a nuclear reactor, we have observed that the Board of Governors has become politicized," Ulyanov said in response to whether the IAEA is genuine platform for dialogue or a political tool for Washington and its allies.
Referring to the recent European push at the UN Security Council to trigger the so-called 'snapback' mechanism, stipulated in the 2015 nuclear deal or the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the Russian diplomat called the move 'irrational' and 'unhelpful.'
Earlier, Ulyanov insisted that the European troika cannot resort to other provisions of the agreement, unless and until they return to good faith by implementing their own commitments.
Iran and the United States held five rounds of indirect talks on the nuclear program before the Israeli regime and the US launched aggressive strikes against Iran and its nuclear facilities in violation of international law and the UN Charter. The attack happened just days before a sixth round of talks had been scheduled to take place.
The three European countries, which failed to denounce the US-Israeli aggression, had themselves held talks with Iran at the level of deputy foreign ministers in Geneva, but they also resorted to reimposing the UN sanctions, a move Iran, Russia, and China described as legally baseless and politically destructive.
