Iran considers past experience on US proposal for direct talks: Foreign Ministry spokesperson

Tehran, IRNA -- Esmaeil Baghaei, Foreign Ministry spokesperson, says Iran definitely takes into account its past experiences when dealing with the United States, including over its proposal for direct talks on the Iranian nuclear program.

The United States has disrupted diplomatic processes at least two or three times over the past decade, which indicate that it has not shown goodwill from the beginning, Baghaei said at his weekly press briefing in Tehran on Tuesday while responding to a question from IRNA about Iran's reaction to the US secretary of state's proposal for direct talks between the two countries.

"Basically, in dealing with the US, we must consider this reality that we faced the Zionist regime's aggression supported by the US, while we were in the midst of a negotiation process. Certainly, we cannot speak about the future without considering past experiences," the spokesperson said.

No legal basis for E3 to invoke snapback

Baghaei reiterated that the three European countries, Britain, France, and Germany, which are known as E3 and are members of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, have no legal authority to invoke the snapback mechanism that would return the UN Security Council's annulled resolutions against Iran.

He said that Russia and China, the two other members of the 2015 deal, are also opposed to the E3 measure, referring to a joint letter by the foreign ministers of Iran, Russia, and China, which explains the illegality of the E3 move. Baghaei added that Iran remains in contact with Russia and China, and will make utmost effort to do what aligns with its national interests.

Europe turned into an instrument of US pressure

The Foreign Ministry spokesman said that the West's approach toward Iran is full of contradictions. They accuse Tehran of violating the 2015 nuclear deal, which is officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), while they deliberately ignore the fact that they themselves have failed to meet their commitments since 2018, added Baghaei.

He noted that Iran's reciprocal actions were in response to their failure to meet their commitments, and were fully within the framework of the JCPOA.

Baghaei also stressed that Europe has shifted from being a mediator to becoming a tool of US pressure, adding that the recent statement by the US secretary of state shows European actions are directly in line with Washington and Israel's agenda to the point of even starting the process of reinstating UN sanctions.

Negotiations with IAEA

Baghaei said that two rounds of talks have so far been held between representatives of the Foreign Ministry and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Those talks took place at the level of the IAEA deputy director general and have not yet produced any concrete results, he said, adding that no decision has been made either to continue the negotiations.

On the recent visit of two IAEA inspectors to Iran, the spokesperson said that they were here to load fuel into the Bushehr nuclear reactor to ensure the plant's continued operation, as per existing procedures and regulations. At present, no inspections are being conducted in Iran, and no inspectors are on the ground, he added.

Israel's assassination of Yemeni officials

Regarding the recent developments in Yemen and Palestine, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson extended condolences to the Muslim people of Yemen and Palestine following the martyrdom of the Yemeni cabinet members during the Israeli regime's military aggression as well as its atrocities in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank. He described the airstrike, which took the lives of the Yemeni officials, as an obvious war crime and a clear violation of international rules, demonstrating the nature of the Israeli regime, which knows no limits.

Baghaei said that this action coincided with the intensification of genocide in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including the massacre of the Palestinian people due to bombings and direct shootings while waiting in food lines, as well as due to hunger and thirst.

Tony Blair's destructive role

Regarding the alleged role by former British prime minister Tony Blair in a Gaza plan, Baghaei said that the media's reaction and sensitivity to that issue shows a reality, which is his record of interventions in West Asia; interventions that led to horrific consequences for regional countries.

'Greater Israel' claim a wake-up call for immediate action

He discussed Iran's viewpoint regarding the statements and claims made by Israeli and US officials about "Greater Israel," saying that the issue has been met with reactions from all countries in the region.

It is very clear that the propagation of such claims aligns with the expansionist and warmongering policies of the Israeli regime, Baghaei said. although all regional countries denounced the regime, these reactions are not enough, as the Israeli regime's claims serve as a warning that necessitates immediate action by each and every regional nation and the international community to prevent threats to global peace and security, the Iranian diplomat said.

Anti-Palestinian plan

The spokesperson said that what is happening in Gaza today is genocide, all with the clear goal of expelling the indigenous Palestinians from their own land. He continued that any individual, country, or entity that in any way aligns with this conspiracy and the plan of collective annihilation of the Palestinian people must be held accountable and recognized as an accomplice and partner in crime.

SCO condemnation of Israeli aggression on Iran

Baghaei said that what is particularly important for Iran during the latest Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China is the condemnation of the military aggression of the Israeli regime and the US against Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities and the reaffirmation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 endorsing the JCPOA.

US interference in Latin America

Regarding the hostile actions of the United States against Venezuela, Baghaei said that Washington's recent actions can be interpreted as a return to blatant colonial policies.

US interference in Latin American countries is nothing new and has existed for decades, but this time the speed and openness of their actions is unprecedented, he said. The US move to deploy military forces to the shores of a sovereign state under the pretext of combating drug trafficking is absolutely unjustifiable, he added.

Iran-China agreement

Baghaei referred to Iran-China agreements in the field of oil sales and Beijing's position on the activation of the snapback mechanism, saying that the 25-year cooperation agreement between Iran and China encompasses various areas, including trade and energy.

This agreement continues its course unaffected by external distractions, he added.

Iran-Afghanistan talks on water

On the inauguration of the Pashdan Dam in Afghanistan and its impact on water problems in northeastern Iran, especially the city of Mashhad, the spokesperson said that the issue of water, whether Iran's rights from the Helmand River or other inflows from Afghanistan, remains a permanent item on the agenda of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in its consultations with Afghan counterparts. Both the energy and foreign ministries use every opportunity to voice Iran's concerns and seek solutions to at least mitigate the problems, added Baghaei.
