Tehran, IRNA -- Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, says that leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) have voiced opposition to Europe's selective interpretation of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2231.
Speaking from Tianjin, China, where he accompanied President Masoud Pezeshkian to the SCO Summit, Gharibabadi emphasized that member states—including China, Russia, and Pakistan—firmly reject the reactivation of UN sanctions through the so-called snapback mechanism.
There is a clause in the final statement that stresses the full and proper implementation of Resolution 2231, the official said.
This, Gharibabadi said, means that European countries cannot selectively invoke the snapback provision while failing to uphold their own commitments under the resolution.
He also highlighted a significant section of the SCO statement that condemns military aggression by Israel and the United States against the Islamic Republic of Iran in June 2025.
This includes attacks on nuclear facilities and actions that violate international law, he noted.
