Tehran, IRNA -- An advisor to President Masoud Pezeshkian says all efforts and capabilities of the country should be directed to confronting Europe's push to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran, which were lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

"The return of international sanctions should not be underestimated," Mehdi Sanaei, political aide to Pezeshkian, wrote in a post on his X account on Saturday, referring to the activation of the snapback mechanism by the European signatories to the JCPOA.

Warning that long-term sanctions have harmful and profound effects on any country and its development, he said, "The UN sanctions would lead to further restrictions on Iran's presence in the international arena and even difficulties in maintaining relations with Eastern powers."

On Thursday, Britain, France, and Germany - collectively known as the European Troika or E3 - officially sent a notification to the UN Security Council to activate the so-called 'snapback mechanism' for the return of anti-Iranian sanctions.

The troika's action prompted condemnations, with Russia urging the international community to reject it, while China warned that the sanctions move is "counterproductive."

Iran also decried the move, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a call with his European counterparts, describing it as "unjustified" and "lacking any legal basis."

"The Islamic Republic will respond appropriately to this unlawful and unwarranted measure," he said.
