In response to reports that UK, France, and Germany on Thursday submitted a notification to the UN Security Council regarding the initiation of the "snapback" sanctions mechanism, and under Security Council Resolution 2231, the Council must decide within 30 days whether to trigger the mechanism, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Friday that the Iranian nuclear issue is at a critical crossroads. Initiating the "snapback" sanctions mechanism at the Security Council would not be constructive and would undermine the political and diplomatic process of resolving the Iranian nuclear issue.
China believes that any action by the Security Council at this stage should help facilitate the resumption of dialogue and negotiations, rather than create new confrontations that could worsen or escalate the situation, Guo said. China will continue to uphold an objective and fair position, actively encourage peace and promote dialogue, and play a constructive role in bringing the Iranian nuclear issue back to the track of diplomatic resolution at an early date, the spokesperson added.
The UK, France and Germany have begun the process of restoring major UN sanctions on Iran - lifted under a 2015 deal - as tensions once again escalate over Tehran's nuclear program, BBC reported on Thursday.
The move will trigger a so-called snapback mechanism, which could result in the return of sanctions in 30 days, according to the media report.
