Iran has invested around $10 billion in its emerging hub of petrochemical industries in the southeastern port of Chabahar, according to a senior official who says the country aims to turn the area into a major hub for production and exports of petrochemical products.

CEO of Iran's National Petrochemical Company (NPC) Hassan Abbaszadeh said on Tuesday that the company seeks to reach a petrochemical production target of 10 million metric tons (mt) per year in Chabahar, adding that polymers would account for some 3.5 million mt of the output.

Abbaszadeh said that several large petrochemical plants will be opened in Chabahar in the calendar year starting late March 2026, adding that the rate of progress reported in those projects is more than 70%.

He said that the petrochemical projects in Chabahar will have a major impact on the economic and social development in Sistan and Baluchestan, a relatively impoverished province which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The NPC chief said that the projects can also count on large volumes of exports to regional countries where demand for petrochemical products is increasing.

The senior official made the remarks while in a ceremony to open the first phase of a 1 gigawatt power plant in Mokran Petrochemical Town in Chabahar.

The electricity station is currently capable of supplying 183 megawatts of power to industries in the region.

Iran has introduced some mega projects to develop Chabahar and turn it into a new economic and trade hub on the Sea of Oman.

The port is currently home to Iran's only ocean port, which connects the Indian Ocean to Afghanistan and other landlocked countries in the Central Asia region.
