Tehran, IRNA -- The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has emphasized that Iran strongly objects to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s conduct but remains committed to its obligations.
Speaking to a radio program on Thursday, Esmaeil Baghaei said that the upcoming visit by an IAEA delegation is not for inspections but for discussions on drafting a new protocol for interactions under the current unprecedented circumstances.
Objections to IAEA's political conduct
Baghaei reiterated Iran's strong objections to the IAEA's recent measures, saying that Western countries, particularly the U.S. and the European trio, have exploited the Agency to pressure Iran and distort realities.
He also criticized the latest IAEA report, which was based on a resolution pushed by these countries, saying that the report contained inaccuracies and served as a pretext for Israeli attacks.
Despite these objections, Baghaei affirmed Iran's continued commitment to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and said that the upcoming IAEA visit is intended to discuss a new protocol for engagement under the current exceptional circumstances.
He emphasized that attacks on peaceful, monitored nuclear facilities is an unprecedented situation that requires new protocols reflecting on-the-ground realities and parliamentary statute.
Europeans have no right to trigger "snapback mechanism"
Addressing the "snapback mechanism", Baghaei said that foreign media are creating tension, which is a part of psychological warfare. He explained that the mechanism allows one party to the agreement to suspend its obligations if the other party fails to fulfill its commitments.
Iran's reduction in commitments was a legal response to the US's unlawful withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), he said, adding that it was the European parties who failed to uphold their obligations.
He said that neither the US nor the European members of the JCPOA have the right to invoke the snapback mechanism, because the US has exited the deal and the European members have failed to fulfill their commitments and even did not condemn recent attacks that were in violation of UN Resolution 2231.
Baghaei reiterated that any attempt to reimpose UN sanctions would be met with a strong response from Iran.
Rumors about US negotiations
Baghaei denied any scheduled time or location for negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
Responding to questions about reports about a mediator other than Oman for indirect talks between Iran and the US, he noted that the news is "fake and fabricated".
He also provided more examples for such fake news, including reports about evacuation of foreign embassy in Tehran.
He added that diplomatic messaging with the US continues through the Swiss Embassy in Tehran and the Pakistani Embassy in Washington, saying that it is natural for intermediaries to convey messages at various times.
Warning to neighbors about enemy exploitation
Baghaei stressed the importance of maintaining good relations with neighboring countries and wanted them to be vigilant against Israeli efforts to damage those ties. He said that Iran does not accuse its neighbors of anything but wants them to be watchful so that their territories would not be used by the Israeli regime to undermine Iran's national security.
