Iran becomes new BRICS member

Iran foreign ministry spokesman announce that from today Islamic Republic of Iran is a new member of BRICS group.

Tehran -ISNA- Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kan'ani announce on Monday that full membership of the Islamic Republic of Iran to BRICS group come into effect from today.

"BRICS gaining new importance in International arena by it's new members" Kan'ani says in weekly news conference in Tehran.

Iran top diplomat asserted: "We have always paid attention to multilateralism and the use of BRICS opportunities. BRICS will definitely provide Iran with more opportunities in multilateral international relations. Iran's membership in BRICS is one of the results of improving Iran's position in the international arena".

In 2006, Brazil, Russia, India and China created the "Bric" group. South Africa joined in 2010, making it "Brics".

Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are due to enter on 1 January.

No name for the expanded group has been announced, but it is thought it might be "Brics +".

Argentina was invited to join but its new president, Javier Milei, has said it will not.

Brics countries make decisions at an annual summit. Members of the group take turns to be its president for a year.
