Iranian FM, acting FM of Afghanistan discuss Helmand water right, bilateral issues

Tehran (ISNA) - Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has held phone talks with Afghan Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaqi over bilateral issues.

Amir-Abdollahian reaffirmed Iran's right to the Helmand River water. He referred to the recent visit by an Iranian technical team to Afghanistan, saying such trips will boost transparency in line with the 1970 Helmand agreement.

Amir-Abdollahian then spoke about the freedom of an Iranian journalist in Afghanistan and called for the resolution of some issues between the two sides.

The Iranian foreign minister underlined that the Islamic Republic of Iran has always wished well for Afghanistan and the good people of that country.

Pointing to the presence of many Afghan nationals in Iran, Amir-Abdollahian said Tehran puts emphasis on cooperation between all sides in Afghanistan to bring stability, security and welfare to the country's people.

Afghanistan's Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaqi, for his part, thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran and said efforts are underway to resolve some problems.

He then invited Amir-Abdollahian to visit Afghanistan, noting that the Tehran-Kabul relationship is based on neighborliness and brotherhood.
