Tehran (ISNA) - Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani stressed that the Islamic Republic is pursuing negotiations on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and on lifting sanctions based on national interests in order to protect and fulfill the rights of Iranian people.
Speaking at a weekly press conference on Monday, Kanaani said, "We don't trust the US and the JCPOA wasn't a product of trust in Washington".
Responding to a question about the audio file attributed to Robert Malley in which he said that the purpose of negotiations with Iran and the JCPOA is to increase pressure on Iran, the spokesman said, "The US is the responsible of what has been said in this audio file and they should clarify in this regard".
"Iran is pursuing negotiations on the JCPOA and on lifting sanctions based on national interests in order to protect and fulfill the rights of Iranian people," he continued.
"The continuation of negotiations to revive the JCPOA and lift unjust sanctions and the responsible return of both sides to their commitments is not based on the trust of the Iranian government and nation in the US regime," Kanaani emphasized.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Kanaani stressed, "We consider any action aimed at recognizing the Zionist regime and establishing relations with this regime neither in the interest of the Palestine's cause nor peace in the region".
"The Zionist regime has defined its security strategy in the region based on creating insecurity and instability," he added.
Regarding the recent visit of the UN's Special Representative for Iraq to Tehran and the goals of this trip, Kanaani said, "Iran welcomes the role of the UN in establishing peace and stability in Iraq. During this visit, negotiations were held on various issues related to Iraq, including the process of fighting terrorism in Iraq and at the regional level, and using common capacities of Iran and Iraq in this regard".
He also announced that the arrangements are underway for Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian's visit to Pakistan.
The spokesman emphasized that in this visit, increasing bilateral cooperation in various fields, including economic areas and the fight against terrorism will be discussed.
"A high-ranking economic delegation will accompany the Iranian foreign minister on this trip," Kanaani continued.
Pointing to the issue of Iran's water rights from the Hirmand River and the follow-ups by Iranian Foreign Ministry in this regard, Kanaani said, "The issue is one of the issues covered in Iran's regular talks with Afghanistan's caretaker officials and that there have been some preliminary agreements as well, so Tehran expects the Afghan side to act responsibly in this respect".
"As the Afghan side has reiterated that they accept Iran's water rights based on the existing agreement between the two countries, they are expected to fulfill their obligations," he added.
