Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's opening remarks during talks with Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hossein Amir Abdollahian, Tunxi, March 30, 2022

30 March 2022 14:41

Mr Minister,

We are delighted to see you and your team.

We met in Moscow fairly recently, and we discussed our bilateral affairs, as well as cooperation on the regional and international agendas, in the most detailed manner.

We are interested in expanding partnership with Iran, our friends and partners in all areas, including bilateral affairs, the Caspian Sea region and other regional matters.

In a broader context, our interaction has paramount significance for conducting universal conversations to defend key matters, as regards the future international order.

We can see open and persistent attempts to revise the fundamental principles of the UN Charter. Most notably, we can see the efforts of our Western colleagues to undermine the principle of states' sovereign equality and non-interference in the domestic affairs of other countries.

The mechanism of unilateral illegitimate sanctions is a tool of this unacceptable policy.

In our relations with Iran and other close partners, we will aim to denounce this unacceptable phenomenon in international discussions. We will also work on practical steps that make it possible to circumvent these unlawful actions.

I am happy to have this opportunity to continue our mutual dialogue on all the matters I mentioned and on any other issues.
