Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's opening remarks during talks with Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Moscow, March 15, 2022
15 March 2022 14:17
We are delighted to welcome you to Moscow.
We have an intensive political dialogue, aimed at ensuring the broad and effective implementation of the agreements reached during Iranian President Sayyid Ebrahim Raisi's visit to Russia in January.
Important documents are being prepared to confirm the new quality of our partnership. It is gratifying that despite all the recent developments, our bilateral trade is growing at a record pace. In 2021, it increased by almost 80 percent to over $4 billion.
I am sure that the prospects are even more impressive than this, given that the agreements on the resumption of the comprehensive plan of action to resolve the situation around the Iranian nuclear programme have reached the final straight. Moscow and Tehran have always attached great importance to interaction in international affairs.
Today we will discuss further coordination of actions on the Syrian settlement in the Astana format, and touch upon other crises in the Middle East and North Africa. We will also talk about the Afghan settlement, which requires global attention.
We appreciate our trust-based dialogue and your objective position on what is happening in Ukraine.
I am sure that today's conversation will be rewarding in terms of reaching practical agreements on further expansion of cooperation in all these areas.
