Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) forces have identified and dismantled a terrorist and counterrevolutionary team in the country's northwestern province of West Azarbaijan.

A statement by the IRGC Ground Force's Hamzeh Seyed al-Shohada Base said on Sunday that its forces engaged the terrorist elements who tried to infiltrate the country through a border point close to the city of Piranshahr on Saturday night.

In the ensuing clashes with the IRGC forces, the statement added, two terrorists were killed and some weapons and ammunition were confiscated.

Piranshahr is an Iranian city in the southern part of West Azarbaijan province, which has common border with the neighboring Iraq.

Earlier this month, the IRGC forces dismantled a hostile counterrevolutionary group, dubbed Hoboot Iran (Fall of Iran), in the country's northwestern province of East Azarbaijan.

The group had been trying to bring together various anti-Iran movements against the Islamic establishment since early 2018 and was masterminded by foreign-based monarchists and funded by certain Western countries and Saudi Arabia.

The IRGC's Hamzah Seyed al-Shohada Base has also destroyed a team of terrorists who were trying to infiltrate into the country from a border point in Salmas County, West Azarbaijan province, near the border with Turkey

Seven terrorists were killed during the operation. Two members of Iran's volunteer Basij forces also lost their lives in the clashes.
